All-Time Hawaii: RB
I was going to go with defense for the next poll, but with Chad Owens set to break Gary Allen's career all-purpose mark, we'll go with RB's. Lots of names to choose from throughout the years... I'll try to limit it to my top five. Again, feel free to give your own suggestions.
I won't have a poll for the fullbacks, but can we all agree that the choices would be limited to David Toloumu... and uhh... I guess we can add West Keliikipi.

Travis sims. He was on one of the first NCAA video games, he was the best player. I ran him till his legs fell off.

Wasn't alive when Sherer played. I was 6 when Allen played and from reading the articles about him, I missed out big time. Was going through pubes when Fakava played so I didin't know much there. Sims was the best going straight forward. Great for the option.
I'd have to go with Farmer. Very versitle. Could run with power north and south. Speed off tackle. But here's the biggest reason during the 89 win vs BYU:
Jim Leahey w/ Rick Blangiardi on the telecast:
"Ball is on BYU's 45. There's the snap. Gabriel sells the screen. Farmer has an opening down the sideline. 50. 40. Goeas is escorting him. To the 30. The 20. 10. He cuts back. 5! Touchdown!"
Not the exact words but you get the picture if you saw the game. I can still run the play in my head to this day. Thank goodness I still have that video tape. Gotta turn it into DVD.

Sims
I would have to pick Travis Sims and his Thunder Calves....
But was Nuu Faaola a RB or FB, because if he were a RB, he would be my choice.. He also liked running over us small dudes on the BBall Court 2

I like Heikoti Fakava, I just remember his legs kept pumping no matter what. He was all heart, his body was practically falling apart but he kept on going. I think he would have had a chance in the NFL if he didn't have so many injuries. He also ran the ball when running was the first option in the attack, so the opposing defense looked for it and he still ran the ball well.

Allen was the Best
I voted for Gary Allen, though a case could be made for any one of the other nominees. I selected Allen, because he led the team in rushing yards for four straight years (1978 to 1981). He even led the team in receiving yards in 1981.
Allen is the UH career leader in rushing yards and his rushing yards per game is second only to Larry Sherrer.

I voted for Gary Allen myself. Another that I think is worth mentioning is Anthony Edgar. He succeeded Allen and Toloumu, but was a smaller back. He was kind of like Mike Bass, but not as likely to go down on the first touch... or like Brewster, but maybe a little faster.
And I seriously think that if he hadn't gotten injured his freshman year, we'd be listing Junior Lopati here too.

Did Gary Allen play in a single setback formation?
MisterPurple, very true about Jr Lopati. He was plagued with injuries just like Nate Ilaola. Just like nate, Jr Lopati was impressive when he was healthy. Uh-oh, we starting to show our age!

Toloumu paved the way
David Toloumu played at the same time as Gary Allen. Toloumu paved the way for much of Allen's yardage.
Toloumu also was a capable runner and a reliable receiver out of the backfield. Though Toloumu was not a big guy, he is probably the best "fullback" to play at UH.
Just to remember Allen and Toloumu shows my (old) age.

Toloumu's son
Speaking of David Toloumu, does anyone know what college he is at?
He played RB at Long Beach Poly with Hercules Satele when they came down and played Kahuku...
He would be a great fit in our offense.. Run 'em over like pops used to do.

I voted for Gary Allen too. As NelsonO said, he was a 4 year starter and lead the team in rushing all 4 years from 1978 to 1981. He is still the career rushing yardage leader with 3,654 yards. He also holds the career passing receiving record for runnning backs with 895 yards.
Although he was a RB in high school, he was small and light (about 5'-10', 155 lbs. as a freshman) and he started out at UH as a DB or WR. As a freshman on the scout team he was used as a RB. Once the coaches saw his running ability, he was quickly moved to RB and the rest is history. Tomey used to say that Allen had "quick feet". He was very quick and elusive.
He was drafted by Houston and played with Houston, Dallas (with Hershal Walker) and the CFL for a number of years.
In the Tomey era, the offense was a 2-back system. They used both the I-formation and split back formation.
