All-Time Hawaii: QB *edited* (TC added)

Post by wayoutwest »

beginning this week for the next 12 weeks or so, i'll be posting a poll for football fans to vote on their all-time favorite former uh player at each position. i think this will be interesting to see some of the names that might pop up here and there. feel free to reply with your own suggestions if a player is missing from the poll:

to start off the polling, we'll begin with the QB:

now that i think about it, i'm not even sure kaulukukui was a qb... are there any fans who were alive in the 1930's (and care to admit it) who would like to talk about hawaii's first all-american?

Can I add Dan Robinson.... He was the QB that took a 0-12 warriors team to a 9-5 record and a win over the Oregon St. Beavers in the Aloha Bowl. Raphel Cherry. <- Most athletic. Michael Carter <-Best Option QB. Took UH to a 10-2 mark and a win over Illinois in the Holiday bowl. Nick "Rolo" Rolovich <- Most prolific passer. Came in and took over for TC and put up multiple 500 yard passing games and a blow out of BY boohoo. Garrett Gabriel <- The local boy who out played Ty Detmer when Detmer received the Heisman Throphy. One of the most memorible win in UH history.

Hard choices man!!!!!!!

I think you might as well include current players, or at least seniors.
Elimimian, Chang, and Owens are all record holders I think. Chang and Owens of course, nationally.

Man that's some good choices. I agree with Maui though, you gotta add Dan to that list. What about Freitas?

I don't know man. I gotta take some time for this one. Each one has a special place and their own signature.

- Never knew Kaulukukui and Cherry too much. Too young?
- Loved Carter's heart and leadership but hated the offense. You can't overlook the bowl win though.
- Only if Rolo was around 4 years. What may have been.

Then you got Mr. Gabriel. If you look at a QB who had it all, leadership, heart, able to run the option, threw in the west coast, local boy. He did what no other UH QB before him had done by beating BYU for the first time after the "blue streak". Then he made history by beating them not once but TWICE IN A ROW!!! I'm talking about blowout wins fellas. I gotta go with Garrett, personally.
Often wrong...seldom in doubt!

I agree, I went with Garrett. Quarterbacked two blowouts of BYU, both just as good as the 2001 blowout. And also to our first modern-era bowl game.
If I'm not mistaken, that was the last time we played Michigan State...

Yes, that was the Aloha Bowl where they handed our okoles to us. Oh well...we got some payback coming to close this season.

Another write in vote for Chang. I like pure passers and as much as I like Rolo, he had much better receivers to work with.

I thought this poll was for former UH players. Isn't that right?

I voted for Carter, that's not to say I didn't like the rest, they were all unique and valuable to UH during their tenure. Rolovich was a freakin' animal in his final year, I wish he had another year of eligibility left and Gabriel was awesome too. Question? Any relation between Garrett Gabriel and the LA Rams QB Roman Gabriel? I've always wondered but never pursued the answer...mahalos...

I like M Carter because he was only the third NCAA quarterback to rush for a 1000 and pass for a 1000 yards. He also did a lot more with a lot less talent surrounding him.

BTW does anyone remember who was the quarterback when Hawaii almost beat National Champs BYU when Walter Murray dropped the ball in the endzone.

I still remember when Jim Leahey said, "wouldn't it be somethnig if Hawaii blocked this punt." Then Hawaii blocked it and almost went in for the game winning score with time expiring in the 4th quarter. *memories*
