about the bowl...
If UH finishes the season with 6 wins BUT are in 3d place will they still go to the Hawaii bowl? I mean the top 3 finishers in the conference get the bow bid right?
Re: about the bowl...
Nope! Only the first and second place WAC teams get's automatic bowl bids. The third bowl bid will depend on what UH does. Even if UH finishes 4th or 5th, but still win 7 games, then UH will get the Hawaii Bowl bid. If UH don't win at least seven games, then more than likely, the team that finishes third will get the bid.WR UNIVERSITY wrote:If UH finishes the season with 6 wins BUT are in 3d place will they still go to the Hawaii bowl? HI Bowl
UH needs 7 wins, period!!!
If they won FAU it would have counted... Toward the 7 wins..
Once they get the magical 7 wins the HI Bowl is theirs...
The biggest loser would be any other WAC team with 7 or more wins..
HI Bowl want UH, Silicon Valley (Fresno St), and the Humanitarian or what ever it's called now (Boise St)
UTEP is 5-2 with SJSU, SMU, Tulsa, and Rice remaining...
They could go 9-2 and stay home and suck rocks....
If Boise gets invited to another bowl, as it did last year, that would open the door for another WAC team to go bowling in Freezing Boise on the Smurf Turf (like Tulsa did last year)
On ESPN radio, they predicted UTEP vs. Alabama Birmingham in the Hawaii bowl.... Boy Jim Donovan would probably jump off the Pali if that happens...

Re: HI Bowl
If UTEP wins the rest of their games, that means they won't finish worse than second place. They are 3-1 in the WAC now. The only other teams that have one or no losses are Boist St.(No loss) and La. Tech(One loss). If UTEP and La. Tech ties for second with one loss, the automatic bid goes to UTEP because the beat them head-to-head this past weekend.BigWave96744 wrote:UTEP is 5-2 with SJSU, SMU, Tulsa, and Rice remaining...

Like I said in my post above, the first and second place teams get automatic bowl bids from the WAC.

Re: HI Bowl
Ummm...I don't think, should UH have won against FAU, it would have counted against the mandatory 7 wins. I remember media guys talking about this at the beginning of the season. Yes, FAU is moving to D1A but it won't be official until next year. This year is a probation year. What sucks about their situation is, if they have a great year (7+ wins), they aren't allowed to participate in any postseason game which includes the D1AA playoffs.BigWave96744 wrote:UH needs 7 wins, period!!!

While the Warriors are assured a berth in the Hawai'i Bowl if they win the majority of their regular-season games, the Owls are in limbo. As probationary members of Division I-A and the Sun Belt Conference, the Owls are ineligible to compete for the league championship or a berth in the Division I-AA playoffs.
I can't find a link that references whether or not the game would count but if FAU is in a probation year, I doubt it would count. It's all irrelevant anyways.
Re: HI Bowl
I heard in an interview that an NCAA official said that, if UH have won the FAU game, it would have counted as part of the 7 win requirement.BigWave96744 wrote:I can't find a link that references whether or not the game would count but if FAU is in a probation year, I doubt it would count. Okay...here's the skibby from CFN:10 wrote:I thought the rule was 6 wins against I-A opponents.... did it get changed to 7?
Maybe it was 6 wins AND a winning season....
In which case, beating FAU would have made a difference.
Required to be considered for bowl consideration:
13-game schedule: 7 wins (at least 6 vs. Div. I-A teams)*
12-game schedule: 6 wins (at least 6 vs. Div. I-A teams)**
11-game schedule: 6 wins (at least 6 vs. Div. I-A teams)*
*Under NCAA guidelines, a program is allowed to use one victory over a I-AA team every four years toward the necessary number of wins needed for bowl eligibility.
** 6-6 teams will be eligible for bowl games only if they are filing a conference slot and only if no teams are available from that conference with a better record.
In the event of an at-large opening, bowls are required to take a team with a winning record from another conference before taking a 6-6 at-large team.
This where the game vs FAU where the win wouldn't count because in 01 and 02 we played Montana and E. Illinois and won those games.
Here's skibby #2 that was from last year's bowl season:
WAC
The WAC has three automatic bowl tie-ins: The league’s top three teams get bids from the Hawaii Bowl, which has chosen the local Warriors, the Humanitarian Bowl and the Silicon Valley Classic. From here, things get rather complex. Boise State and Tulsa—No. 1 and No. 2 in the conference—are guaranteed of playing in a bowl game. Where they’re headed is still very much in the air. The Broncos are usually a natural fit for the local H-Bowl, however, WAC commissioner Karl Benson is peddling them to other bowl committees in hopes of clearing space for four WAC teams in the postseason. The Fort Worth Bowl and Music City Bowl are possibilities for Dan Hawkins’ team. If Benson is successful, Tulsa would take Boise’s spot in the H-Bowl and Fresno State would play in the Silicon Valley Classic for the fourth straight year.
Bowl Eligible: Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Tulsa and Nevada
So I guess there's 3 automatic bowls given 1) the team is bowl eligible and 2) you fall in the top 3 in the WAC.

Regarding the HI Bowl...
I asked Bobby Curran this question and he assured me that from the horse's mouth (Jim Donovan), Hawaii MUST, MUST, MUST finish with a winning record (or 7 wins) and their bid is a guarantee... 6-6 is not considered a winning record.... Furthermore the FAU game WOULD have counted. Even though they are DIV-I, they are still classified as a DIV-IAA win which is allowed to be used once every 3 or 4 years... In 2002 they went 10-3 and 2003 (8-5) so they didn't need to use their Div-IAA exemtion to qualify those years..
Even if they finish 4th in the WAC, the contract written by the HI Bowl's Powers to Be states they have to wait for UH as long as there is a mathematical chance of 7 wins. Even if that means waiting til the end of the Michigan St. game...
I don't think a similar thing holds with the Silicon Valley Bowl... But they do WANT Fresno St... Tulsa got to go last year only because Boise got invited to a better bowl, thus relinquishing their Humanitarian Bowl Bid..
You got to remember, when it comes to bowl games, it's all about the money and filling seats... Who the hell in Hawaii cares to watch UTEP, RICE, or Nevada play Alabama-Birmingham, Houston, or Memphis???
Remember the 2001 season where we went 9-3 and stayed home and opened presents all day and watched teams with 6-5 records play...
