2018, New Kickoff rule
"According to Greg Johnson of NCAA.com, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved a new rule that will allow players to call for a fair catch anywhere inside the 25-yard line on kickoffs and have it result in a touchback, with the football being placed at the 25-yard line."
I guess it helps our kickers as they can't kick it deep into the end zone anyways. Any thoughts from Warrior fans? Good or bad rule.

Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
Kickoff strategy has always been an integral part of the game. But with the advances in pads and helmets, along with advances in player's physical training, injuries are heightened, especially with the recognition of head injuries/concussions. I think that the game has to evolve to try to protect the players' best interests in the long run.
The high and short kickoffs from the past couple of seasons was due to Mayur Chaudhari's strategy, not so much the strength of the kicker's legs IMHO.

Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
may as well just use a punter on kickoffs, no?
Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
Maybe might see the use of more on-side, squib and pooch kicks now?

Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
This is a terrible rule since games are won and lost on field position. Pinning the other team within the 25 yard line is critical to winning and losing. Of course, not the UH defense as of the last couple of years.
Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
Squib kicks touch the ground so yah, I wonder what the ruling would be. Can you fair catch a punt that hits the ground first? I would imagine that this would apply either way.BigWave96744 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 16, 2018 6:48 amWow that's a thoughtstranger808 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 15, 2018 3:27 pmokay, I have a serious question...can a squib kick be fair caught? Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
once the ball touches the ground no fair catch can be made. that's why kickers try get the ball to bounce off the ground first when kicking an on side kick.stranger808 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 15, 2018 3:27 pmokay, I have a serious question...can a squib kick be fair caught? If not, squib kick it is.
but, here's another question: since kickoffs are free balls, can a kicking team signal for a fair catch and attempt to catch the ball?
Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
Is getting on the other side of the kickoff and getting under the ball even possible for someone on the kickoff team?st808 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 16, 2018 2:13 pmonce the ball touches the ground no fair catch can be made. that's why kickers try get the ball to bounce off the ground first when kicking an on side kick.stranger808 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 15, 2018 3:27 pmokay, I have a serious question...can a squib kick be fair caught? Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
if there's a strong enough wind, the kick only has to travel 10 yards downfield. kicked high enough a ball might be slowed and even blown back. just wondering if someone ever thought about it on a windy day.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 20, 2018 9:09 pmIs getting on the other side of the kickoff and getting under the ball even possible for someone on the kickoff team?st808 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 16, 2018 2:13 pmonce the ball touches the ground no fair catch can be made. that's why kickers try get the ball to bounce off the ground first when kicking an on side kick.stranger808 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 15, 2018 3:27 pm

it will be interesting to see what the coaches all across D1 football come up with. lolst808 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 20, 2018 11:50 pmif there's a strong enough wind, the kick only has to travel 10 yards downfield. kicked high enough a ball might be slowed and even blown back. just wondering if someone ever thought about it on a windy day.UnBiasFan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 20, 2018 9:09 pmIs getting on the other side of the kickoff and getting under the ball even possible for someone on the kickoff team?st808 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 16, 2018 2:13 pm

Didn't know that. Was wondering why these guys can't kick. I would think if they want a shot at the NFL, that does not let them showcase their true leg strength..
Re: 2018, New Kickoff rule
Dan Kelly had a strong leg and could easily kick deep into the end zone, but the strategy back then was for him to kick deep into the left corner inside the 5 to 10 yard lines. He did shank a few out of bounds to the left, and in one game he shanked two in a row.cabanalane wrote: ↑Wed May 02, 2018 9:25 amDidn't know that. Was wondering why these guys can't kick.
