Great piece. I know we have a number of budget problems that exist here but seeing what those schools do with the resources they have is inspirational.

Awesome piece, I believe i truly shows what makes Polynesian people so special, hard working, humble souls that put family and community above all else.

on a side note, would have been nice if he plugged that Pisa is a Hawai'i grad :D

I remember about 10 or 15 years ago, SI did a similar piece.

And it suggested that Hawaii would emerge with an advantage, assuming that Hawaii would land a lot of these prospects.

It appears now that many of these prospects have made their way past Hawaii and straight to the mainland.

We just gotta show them how comfortable it will be for them here. When dude said that there were about 200 Samoans in D1 I know I'm not the only one that thought yeah, and we have about 50 of them.

I wonder what the NCAA and NFL figures are if you add Tongans, Hawaiians and Hawaii raised athletes..

Wait a minute, I didn't see this part on the show last night. The ending is a promo, but the first few minutes wasn't shown as far as I remember.

Thanks for the link! I saw the promos during the NFL game but missed the show. Very cool segment.

..my theory as to why we (UH) have never been the 1st choice for landing the top tier polynesian prospects

Im STILL not crazy and I just use suiaki as an example but only cause I cant think of anyone else that fits well into my theory....viewtopic.php?f=3&t=34646

Good report from Samoa. Why doesn't UH get more players from Samoa? English as a Second Language and qualifying academically is often the biggest challenge.

This isn't a slight against UH, but there's also the perception among families with relatives on the mainland that Hawaii, while very nice and similar to Samoa in many ways, is too comfortable for many Samoans and that they will be more focused going to school on the continent. Too much hanging out, talking story, having a good time here. That's what I gathered from some of the Samoans I've known who reside on the mainland and have families back in Hawaii and Samoa.

Then again, you have players like Mel Purcell, Keith Ah Soon and others who have prospered athletically and academically @ UH.
