Hawaii in the Big West, who thought we would be this bad

Post by BigWave96744 »

What's really sad is back when we were in the WAC, there was talks of Hawaii joining the Big West and many viewed it as a down grade and said we would dominate every sport.

The only sport to dominate, except this year, is Wahine VBall.  Men's Bball & Baseball and Wahine Softball and Soccer have really struggled.  Wahine basketball struggled the past 2 seasons.

2013-14
MBball (9 teams): 5th
Baseball (9 teams): 8th
WBball (9 teams): 3rd, WNIT
Softball (8 teams): 7th
Soccer (9 teams): 5th
Volleyball (9 teams): 1st NCAA 2nd Rd

2014-15
MBball (9 teams): 4th
Baseball (9 teams): 5th
WBball (9 teams): 1st, WNIT
Softball (8 teams): 3rd
Soccer (9 teams): 8th
Volleyball (9 teams): 2nd NCAA 2nd Rd

2015-16
MBball (9 teams): 5th
Baseball (9 teams): 6th
WBball (9 teams): 3rd, NCAA 1st Rd
Softball (8 teams): 7th
Soccer (9 teams): 9th
Volleyball (9 teams): 1st NCAA 4th Rd

2016-17
MBball (9 teams): 1st, NCAA 2nd Rd
Baseball (9 teams): 5th
WBball (9 teams): 6th
Softball (8 teams): 7th
Soccer (9 teams): 6th
Volleyball (9 teams): 1st NCAA 2nd Rd

2017-18
MBball (9 teams): 5th
Baseball (9 teams): ???
WBball (9 teams): 8th
Softball (8 teams): ???
Soccer (9 teams): 9th
Volleyball (9 teams): 2nd, NCAA 1st Rd

My how we have fallen

Sad. But our choices for a conference were not very good back then. Stay in the WAC, which was disintegrating and ended up very watered down was a no go. MWC did not want Hawaii's non-football sports. WCC was small school, religion oriented only. PAC10/12 said don't call us, we'll call you. Big Sky would have had worse travel than the MWC and no geographic proximity.

Killing the fans for these sports to be performing so poorly in the BWC - agreed.

I watched the Villanova/Alabama basketball game and realized that there is no way Hawaii could be anywhere close to middle of the pack in either conference. CSUF lost by 26 points in the first round to Purdue. St. Marys did not get an invite being in the WCC and having a 28-5 record. So Hawaii is in the right place with the BWC and not doing so badly. They are always vying in all of the sports for number 1 or in the middle of the pack which says a lot for Hawaii in the BWC.

I just hope Erin Ganot doesn't leave for the West Coast Conference, or whatever conference Gonzaga and St Mary's in.

Didn't Gonzaga turn down the MWC? They not flying to Laramie anyway.

Yeah, it only makes sense for baseball and basketball for Gonzaga. I think most of last bunch of comments was because people were poking fun at Laramie. Most teams catch buses in the MWC to Laramie except for Hawaii, SDSU and SJSU. Even then, a lot of times people will fly into the larger airports and take a bus transfer from the major airport. I stopped in Laramie once when I was travelling cross country and I can tell you it was not as exciting as Kearny, Nebraska. Lot of wannabe cowboys in that state.

HEY....I take offense to that! Wyoming is my home!!!! [-X  Wyoming is far better to look at flatter-than-crap Nebraska!!!!!

As to the travel.....most teams including Hawaii will travel to Denver first then take a bus ride to Laramie. Some do fly directly into Laramie since it does have an airport (not a large one but still...)
