23. HAWAII: Janelle Gong, 5-9 OH, Campolindo (Moraga, California); Sophia Howling, 6-3 MB, Venice (California); Shaney Lipscomb, 6-2 MB, La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, California); Arden Misraje, 6-2 OH, Crossroads (Santa Monica, California); Skyler Williams, 6-2 MB, Mayfair (Lakewood, California)
COMMENT: This is a time of transition for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program. Head coach Dave Shoji has retired after 42 years on the bench and the team graduated two of its top three hitters. New coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos inherits a squad that is very talented at the setter position and has depth in the back court. Hawaii needed to find help, especially in the middle, and feels it has done so with this class. Howling, No. 95 in PrepVolleyball.com’s Senior Aces, is the highest-rated recruit. A raw talent with great athleticism, Howling has the potential to develop into an ultra-physical middle with game-changing ability. Williams, another middle and Top 250 Senior Ace, is another outstanding athlete with a huge upside. Lipscomb, who also was a Top 250 Senior Ace, can play middle or outside. Her game has improved markedly over the past year. She has the high energy and aggressiveness that could put her on the court somewhere along the net early in her career. Misraje and Gong round out the class. Misraje has the potential to evolve into a terminator on either pin for Hawaii, while Gong, who has high-level club experience playing in NorCal, has all-around abilities.
