Basebows: Fairy Tale Stuff

Post by GoBows2014 »

Fairy Tale stuff...
except these keep having bad endings : (

A very unusual Wednesday night evening at Murakami.
Overcast and cool, almost chilly since aunties were
pulling on windbreakers when the game started, but
it warmed up later. Not a drop of rain and no wind.

Playing a team from Long Island, New York. Hofstra.
Pretty much non-conference, probably not D1? But
a bunch of big boys with lots of baseball talent.

Basebow fans got to see more new UH players, and
improbably, after we gave up 3 runs early mostly due
to errors, we got back in it with a 2 run inning, so
end up in the bottom of the ninth, down 3-2.

Wait, have we heard this before? No, against Oregon
we had 1 out before we loaded the bases when we
were down 3-2. Tonight? We loaded the bases with
NO outs with an identical score!

Yup, Eric Ramirez to start it off and earned the only
legitimate spot on the bases. Then a nice sac bunt,
but instead of an out at 1st, Hofstra 1B left the
ball in the dirt about 4" from the bag, so we have
runners at 1st and 2nd. Then Alan Baldwin beats
out a bunt on a another bad throw to first, and
guess what? Bows with bases loaded, in the
bottom of the 9th, with *NO* outs. 3-2 game.

Simple sac fly to tie, right? Or hit it to win it?
I'll spare you the details. Coach switched a few
brought in Jonathan Weeks to hit, etc, all to no avail.
We could not scratch a single run across. Lost 3-2.

And it was sloppy. We had *four* rundowns that did not
result in a single out. Two of them cost us runs. There
were more mistakes but those were probably the worst.

Chayce at home plate continues to *thrill* the crowd!
He gunned down two guys tonight trying to steal second,
and might have four or five for the year. He is not a
big guy, but gets out of the crouch so fast and *flies*
that ball to second, we keep ringing up anyone that
tries to steal. This bumped Alan Baldwin to LF but AB
is doing great there, so those positions seem solid.

Andrew Jones started on the hill for UH. Struck out the
side to start it off, had 5 K's by the 3rd inning but
did not last long after that. Hofstra has some pesky
batters that kept fouling us off and running up the
pitch count, this will be a good series. Thurs and Fri
night at 6:35, not much crowd for the "no-name" and
non-conference team. Saturday a DH starting at 1:05.

Irony of the evening? Trap, after the Oregon series,
said Bows would be practicing their rundowns. Tonight?
Twice rundowns started at 1st and 2nd, then went to
3rd and home to keep the runner from scoring. So we
had *four* rundowns in one game? That is unheard of.
So also is that many runners that should be out that
produced zero outs and advanced runners. OK, so at
least nobody threw the ball away, that was good.

Well, if the kids bounce back after what will prolly
be a well deserved butt chewing this evening, Hofstra
obviously thawed out their NY game and brought it
here. Should be fun baseball for the next several days.

Go Bows!
