Quentin Torres-Costa, *Magic* On The Hill

Post by GoBows2014 »

Perfect night for baseball, cool, not much
breeze and only a little mist, no rain. This
is game 3 UAB, Saturday night 3/22/2014.

Jarrett Arakawa fairly workmanlike evening.
He was steady all night, no wild pitches,
and stayed ahead of most batters, didn't
really throw *hard* except 2 or 3 times. But
had enough to get us thru most of the innings.
His heater was looking good but he hardly
used it. Best moment for #17? About 4th
or 5th inning, he got behind the count, all
balls and no strikes. Then he proceeded
to send three *bodacious* strikes in a row
all different, the batter didn't have a chance.

Treat of the night? Quentin Torres-Costa, in
a closer role that became more of a middle
reliever when we went to extra innings.

He is such a fantastic pitcher, his "off-speed"
stuff is about the speed of the heat from the
rest of our 'pen, and his *nasty* stuff is off
the scale. Plus he tried out a few new nastys
in warmups we didn't see in the game, but man
oh man, when we get to see him start and go
for lots of innings? Tonight was an indication
of how good he is, and he is coming off a year
long layoff...can't wait to see him in regular
rotation, his pitching is good enough to give
Matt Cooper a run for tops in the rotation
once he gets his full-game arm in shape again.

Other treat of the night? Julienne Jones, now
our starting 3B, has been in a bit of a hitting
slump but tonight had the game winner with the
sac fly in the extra innings. Kudos to #9 for
the game winning hit!

University of Alabama-Birmingham has been much
tougher than I think anyone expected, especially
their pitchers. Last night (Friday) we almost got
shut out and tonight looked like more of the same
but in the later innings and relief pitchers we
started getting some hits. One more daytime game
on Sunday, but this has been some great baseball!

OC16 has this one also so check it out, glad to
see Oceanic with the local sports support again!

Does anyone know what Torres-Costa's fastball was clocking on the gun last night?

I seem to recall that OC-16 had him up to mid-80's. Definitely harder than Jarrett, and thereby provided a nice contrast to keep the hitters off balance.
