UH Softball tidbits

Post by 808 »

Caught a little of Coach Coolen speaking at the Quarterback Club (from Monday) on Olelo just now. Some interesting tidbits:

- Planning a fundraising golf tournament for October to raise funds for a trip to Shanghai. Team was invited to play there and Jay want them to travel to the Pacific Rim area so they're going. Coolen wasn't specific on when the trip would be but mentioned 2014-15.

- He doesn't call pitches. He teaches his catchers sort of by trial by fire but they call all the pitches.

- Normally, look to seniors for leadership, but Wartner, as catcher seeing the whole field, also has taken on some of the leadership role.

- Knew during recruiting that Majam was going to be "that good". Same with Iwata. Players coming in now are of a different breed. He called them "showcase" players. They tried hard to impress coaches at earlier ages, committed to schools early and then their development in high school slowed. For Majam and Iwata, winning was everything. Players now feel more "entitled" and not used to fighting for every win and every achievement. Coaches now are more like second parents and what kid wants another set of parents. He wasn't being critical, but just stating what the current situation is with newer players. I guess there aren't any "blue chip", "can't miss" players in this class, similar to Majam or Iwata. They could develop into great players like Majam and Iwata, but they don't have that same incoming status that Majam and Iwata had.

- Looked like he passed out their Dollars for Dingers flyers to promote that fundraising opportunity.
