HONOLULU--The 2013 Big West Champion Rainbow Wahine softball team will be honored and receive their championship rings at halftime during the UH men's basketball game vs. UC Riverside this Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Also being honored during halftime will be Kelly Majam Elms, who became Hawai'i's first ever finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award this past fall.

The Rainbow Wahine captured its second Big West crown and sixth overall conference championship with a 20-4 record in their first season back in the BWC. Overall the 'Bows posted a 45-13 record and advanced to the program's 11th NCAA Tournament. The team was led by a trio of highly decorated All-Americans--Jessica Iwata, Kaia Parnaby, and Majam Elms--who helped guide UH to three conference championships, three NCAA appearances, a Super Regional championship, and the school's first ever trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010 during their careers. The championship rings were purchased with funds raised by the Na Wahine Softball Booster Club.

Majam Elms was honored as one of the Top Nine Finalists for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The Top 30 honorees and their families and friends were all included in the reception held in Indianapolis, Ind. in October 2013. The Top 30 had 10 representatives from each NCAA division (I, II, and III) from a range of sports. NCAA schools from all three of its divisions nominated a total of 455 individuals for the prestigious national award which honors graduating female senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves during their collegiate careers.

A two-year team captain and four-year starter in centerfield for Hawaii's softball team, Majam Elms never missed a start in four seasons even though she was diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer between her freshman and sophomore seasons. She finished her career ranked ninth in NCAA history with 72 homeruns and currently holds several career and season records for University of Hawai'i softball program. Majam Elms earned all-conference honors all four years; was an NFCA all-Region player three seasons; was a conference scholar-athlete and an NFCA Scholar-Athlete for all four years. In 2013 she was named Big West Defensive Player of the Year, was a candidate for the 2013 NCAA Senior Class Award; and became just the third player in Rainbow Wahine softball history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-America. Her accolades on the field however do not include all the hours of community service she has spent public speaking, working with children, and at other community service projects. Majam Elms graduated last Spring with a degree in secondary education.
