2013 PrepVolleyball.com Pre-Season 18s National Club Rankings
1. Laguna “Matata” (California)

The Facts: Laguna Beach 18-1 finished 14th in Open last year in Columbus with many, many underclassmen playing primary roles on Michael Soylular’s team. Five of those standouts return for a team that is loaded top to bottom and needs only sustained health to make the championship run we expect. Leading the way is Stanford-bound senior setter Kelsey Humphreys, who was a captain for the USA Youth National Team. Humphreys can run a 5-1 offense but also is very effective hitting on the right in a 6-2. That would give Kyra Goodman, who set 17-1 last year, or Kendra Koelsch, a tall, versatile junior who set Tstreet 16-Raul in 2012, the chance to set three rotations. Returning hitters include skywalking, ultra-physical sophomore Alyse Ford, quick middle Brittany Ptak and 6-4 Elise Ruddins, the No. 2 recruit in the 2013 class. Ruddins will miss extended time with an ankle injury early in the year, but other talents, like MB Chelsea Duhs and OH Kristie Hewko, back with Laguna after a year at Mizuno Long Beach, can help carry the load. Defensively, libero Taylor Whittingham, who started a year ago, is back and much improved. All told, seven underclassmen competed on Laguna Beach 18 MS a year ago. Two, MB Haylee Roberts and OH Sofia Lavin, are now on other teams you’ll find in these rankings, but the five that remain plus the talented reinforcements make Laguna the team to beat in our mind in SoCal. And if you’re tops in Southern California in the 18s age group, you’re probably tops in the nation, too!

21. Ku’ikahi “Tuna” (Hawaii)

The best team in Hawaii returns all nine from 13th place 17 Open team, including the last two Hawaii Gatorade winners, OH Carly Kan and setter Tayler Higgins. MB Brittney Markwith is the one newcomer for a team that will handle the ball behind libero Julia Lau and go fast at all times.

40. Imi’Ike “Poo” (Hawaii)

Head coach Greg Baxter said that his goal is to bring Imi Ike back to the Open division it used to regularly compete in. He has the roster to do it, as seven return from the squad that placed T-5 in 18 National last year, including 6-4 OH Nikki Taylor, 6-0 MB Pati Anae and libero Sara Watanabe. Newcomers to watch include 6-0 setter Loxley Keala, an experienced All-State player; and super athletic 6-0 junior attacker Adora Anae.

2013 Wahine Volleyball Recruiting Class:

Tayler Higgins, 5-10 S, 2013 Senior Ace #19
Nikki Taylor, 6-4 OH, 2013 Senior Ace #26
Keani Passi, 5-9 OH, 2012 AVCA Junior College Player of the Year
Kyra Goodman, 5-11 S

2013 Wahine on scholarship:

Ginger Long 5-11 OH, RsSo
Kaela Goodman 6-1 OH, Sr
Kristiana Tuaniga 6-2 MB, RsSr
Alyssa Longo 5-6 DS, Sr
Ashley Kastl 6-0 OH, RsSr
Jade Vorster 6-4 MB, RsSo
Tai Manu-Olevau 6-0 OH, So
Jane Croson 5-11 OH, Jr
Mita Uiato 5-8 S, Sr
Emily Hartong 6-2, Sr
Tayler Higgins 5-10 Fr
Nikki Taylor 6-4 OH Fr
Kalie Adolpho 6-2 MB Jr (Basketball Scholarship)

6 seniors will complete their volleyball eligibility after this season (2013).

Keani Passi, reported earlier by Ann Miller, will RS for this season, and will be placed on scholarship beginning in 2014. And, IMHO, Kyra Goodman will also RS for this season, and be on scholarship beginning in 2014.

So, that leaves 4 scholarships open for the Wahine’ 2014 Recruiting Class.

Oops!

Only 3 scholarships open for 2014. Kalei Greeley, OH 6-2, Martin Luther King Jr, HS, Riverside CA, Club Rancho Valley committed to the Wahine for 2014.

Biggest need for 2014: Three Senior Aces (PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100) listed in the top-20 range (2 MBs and 1 Libero)

What happened to Stauber? Sorry I don't have a SA subscription.

Reportedly will be following Hagins, a 6-4 MB to Idaho. Hagins is listed on RichKern.com as a transfer to Idaho, but not Stauber. So, where she ends up is still a big ?
