Wahine continue to roll

It was a battle of unbeaten teams as Baylor rolled in to last nights match, matching the Wahine's record at 4-0. The Wahine would walk out of the match still unbeaten at 5-0 as the convincingly swept the young Bears from Baylor 25-17, 25-13, 25-19.

Starting four freshman and previously knocking off 25th ranked California the night before Baylor came into the match with the Wahine with a lot of momentum. The Bears started strong getting off to a 5-2 lead to open the match. The lead was short lived as the Wahine went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead forcing Baylor into an early timeout. Baylor would climb back into the lead at 10-9 off of errors by the Wahine. Both teams combined for 10 errors to start off the match.

The Wahine would take the lead for good at 12-11 on a kill by Emily Hartong, one of her 18 for the match. Two consecutive kills by Jade Vorster and another kill by Hartong helped the Wahine build a 16-12 lead. More errors by the young Lady Bears and two kills by Jane Croson all but sewed up the first set victory for the Wahine. Kalei Adolpho ended the first set with her first kill of the match.

Baylor played tough to start the second set trading points with the Wahine. With the score tied at 8 the Wahine got kills from Adolpho and Hartong, added with an error by Baylor helped the Wahine find some separation going up 11-8 on the Lady Bears. From that point on the Wahine just overwhelmed the young Baylor team with their fast tempo offense and their relentless defense. Croson, Hartong and Vorster were just putting down kills at will as the Wahine showed their dominance. Baylor committed two errors to end the set 25-13 in the favor of the Wahine.

Despite the Wahine dominance in the first two sets, Baylor still played tough. They opened the third set going up 5-1, on kills by Tori Campbell and one of their four freshman Laura Jones. This forced Dave Shoji into an early timeout. The Bears would stay strong and build their lead to 10-6 before the Wahine made a run. Three kills by Hartong and a kill by Adolpho helped the Wahine tie the score up at 11. Freshman Jones continued her impressive play as she put down a kill and teammate Thea Munch-Soegaard got in the kill column as the Bears built a 15-13 lead. The Wahine tied the score at 16 after a kill by Mita Uiato and a kill by Hartong and three errors by the Bears put the Wahine up for the final time at 20-16. From there the Wahine just cruised to the three set sweep. Kills by Croson, Goodman and two more by Hartong including match point would give the Wahine the sweep over a young, tough and inspiring Baylor squad.

Emily Hartong continued her dominance as she paced the Wahine with 18 kills, while hitting .457 and seven digs. Croson finished with 11 kills and seven digs. Vorster continued her great play as she contributed eight kills and a block. Kalei Adolpho led the Wahine defense at the net with five blocks while Longo led the Wahine backrow defense with eight digs. Mita Uiato set a nice match picking up 34 assists and seven digs.
