Top Ten Guards at UH

Post by NelsonO »

Here are the top ten guards that I have seen at UH. The first five are easy (in no particular order):
Tom Henderson
Anthony Carter
Chris Gaines
Alika Smith
Predrag Savovic

The next five are more subjective, but here we go (in no particular order): Phil Lott, Jerome Freeman, Matt Gibson, Troy Bowe, and Trevor Ruffin.

I know I left Carl English, Michael Kuebler, and Matt Lojeski off the list. Roderick Bobbitt does not make the list; not yet anyway.

I don't know about the older guys, but isn't everyone on your top-13 list other than AC a shooting guard?

Jerome Freeman and Troy Bowe were true point guards.

Troy Bowe, Anthony Carter, Tom Henderson, Alika Smith, Chris Gaines, and Matt Gibson are in the top-ten in total career assists at UH.

Most of these guards were great scorers as well as great distributors. Chris Gaines and Alika Smith are in the top-ten in both career points and career assists at UH (How is that for trivia). Matt Gibson is not too far behind. While Gibson is in the top-ten in career assists, he is 11th all-time in career points.

Tom Henderson is 12th all-time in career points at UH. Anthony Carter is 13th all-time. Henderson and Carter played only two seasons each at UH.

Point guards who made it to the NBA:
Tom Henderson, Reggie Carter (only played his freshman year, than transferred to St John)

Shooting guards who made it to the NBA:
Trevor Ruffin, and Savo (didn't last a season than moved on to Europe)

If Bobbitt continues to improve on his 3s he has a chance to stick with an NBA team. Presently his Achilles heel is his ball-handling skills.

Oops! My bad...definitely a "senior moment".... Carter played 12 plus years in the NBA. Henderson didn't last that long, but he was a 1st round draft choice by Atlanta. and prior to UH, played for the USA Olympic team that lost a controversial game to Russia...and PF Nash also was a 1st round draft choice by Detroit.

Tom Henderson has a ring. NBA Champion. Starting point guard for the Washington Bullets 1977-78 Championship team.
Keven Grevey was the shooting guard.

AC Carter was close to getting a ring, a few times. Longer NBA career. And does someone know if AC ever won a Euro championship?
