Remains of Gavin Smith found
Sad...
I remember him fondly. He could really light up the scoreboard.

I remember going to a basketball game with a friend and every time Gavin got the ball my friend would yell, "He's going to shoot. He's going to shoot." And yes he shot the ball.CoconutKid wrote:Sad...

RIP Gavin. He's UH's most prolific scorer ever.

Re: Remains of Gavin Smith found
He was the best scorer ever in UH basketball history averaging 23.4 ppg in 1976-77. He was a 6-6 shooting guard/small forward. What makes it amazing was that he did a lot of his scoring from long range before the 3 point shot was instituted. He would have easily averaged over 30 ppg with the 3 point line. Many of his shots were from 25 feet out and more.
The 1976-77 team was really lacking in talent because of the NCAA sanctions. Coach Larry Little gave Smith a lot of leeway and he took shots from everywhere even with a defender in his face. He actually made some shots from the hash mark on the sideline about 35 feet out. I remember one time he made a fade away jumper from the hash mark with a defender fouling him. He landed on his back next to the scorer's table.
Great memories. RIP Gavin Smith.

I was wondering if there was any foul play involved.

His car was found in a warehouse, indicating foul play. Haven't heard how the detectives know it's foul play. Perhaps it was wiped of all fingerprints or something.
