Vander best center since Reggie Cross

Post by ROB T »

I believe Vander is the best center that we have had since Cross. If Vander stays for his senior year he could possibly be the best Center in UH history. I think that he needs to stay his senior year gain a little bit more composure, court awareness and strength.

reggie cross was an excellent player, however, i always thought of him as a power forward.

inch by inch, john penebacker at 6'2" was awesome in the post. he could leap out of the building and definitely outquicked his opponent.

i heard that red rocha who went on to play in the nba as well as coach here was a standout in his day.

my memory is a little fuzzy for that far back but i remember UH using him more as a center than as a power forward even though size wise he was a power forward

My memory of UH basketball is bad, but I remember Erin Galloway. I don't know if he was a center or forward, but I thought he was pretty good.

Melton Werts.
Not doubting, not hating, not loving, just hoping because I am a fan.

Someone who has hops and a nickname does not mean he's a player...sorry.

He and Bob Nash were my first thoughts. I remember Werts swatting'um into the stands and clearouts on rebounds...definitely did not want to be near him when he secured or else KO'd with an elbow.

The best center to play for UH was Tommy Barker. He played the game when dunking was a no no...and he was the only center to make it to the NBA.

I guess u dont remember the kansas game at the stan :D ! The one where helicopter blocks the shot from the kansas guard and goes into 4 rows. If anyone has the video on youtube, that would be sweet!

Unfortunately thats the only highlight I can remember... nothing else. So now let me add-one highlight does not make one a player.

Yeah, Barker was good too...part of the Wayne Crowe, Victor Kelley, etc..era.

Galloway was practically blind if I recall correctly. Great leaper and good defender but was just a dunker on offense. Don't get me wrong that he was a fun player to watch but he's never comes to mind when I think of all time greatest centers.

Vander could be the best center we have had since Reggie Cross.
But Vander is also very frustrating, he has so much talent and does so many bone head things. He jumps and swings his arms to try and block everything which them leaves him out of position for rebounds or gets him fouls, he reaches for passes out at the free throw line extended and when he misses doesnt get back.
The wonderful thing is he still has another year and if he makes another leap in his game as he did from this year to last I really think we could have something special.
Right now I have him just above Ahmet Guye.

The original poster said since Reggie Cross... Many of the above mentioned were before Reggie Cross :)

Reggie Cross was a power forward...not a center.

Ahmet Guye and Toney Maroney were pretty good centers.
