(Iowa Western CC - Council Bluffs, IA)
(Signed and faxed LOI)
(Turned down offers from Iowa, UNC-Charlotte, and UNC-Wilmington.)
(Rivals.com rated Salter as the #3 JUCO prospect in the country.)
(Originally signed with Auburn but was given his release when Auburn changed their head coach.)
As a freshman at Iowa Western, Salter averaged 15.4 points and dished out a team high 118 assists (3.8 apg) while shooting 48 percent from the field. As a sophomore, he was selected as a tri-captain and led the Reivers in scoring (12.6 ppg), assists (2.8 apg), steals (35), free throws made (86) and free throw percentage (.777). The team finished with a 22-8 record and a regional semifinal appearance.
As a prepster, Salter was a Class 4A all-state selection at Rickards High School in Tallahassee after averaging 19 points, six assists and four rebounds per game as a senior in 2007-08. He helped lead the Raiders to a 20-5 record.
Coach Arnold on Salter: “We’re excited to have Anthony join our UH family,” Arnold said. “He has great speed and quickness—something you can’t teach—and the ability to create his own shot and shots for others. His ability to score gives us the ability to play two point guards on the floor at one time.”

Re: PG, Anthony Salter to visit UH this weekend.
This kid sounds like the real deal. He's one of the top JUCO players in the country and would probably start right away @PG if we're able to land him. It would also give Gib the option redshirting any of our young guards (Miles, Wiseman, Coleman, Barnes) that could use a year to develop and adjust to D-1 ball.

JUCO guard Salter commits to UH basketball team
http://www.starbulletin.com/news/breaking/93902214.htmlIowa Western Community College point guard Anthony Salter committed today to play for the Hawaii men's basketball team next season.
Salters, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore, visited the islands on a recruiting trip this weekend.
He chose UH over Iowa, UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington. Salter was an Auburn commit in the fall but got his release when the Tigers changed coaches in the spring.
Salter averaged about 12.6 points and 2.8 assists per game this season, and was a JUCO all-region second-team selection. He has two seasons of eligibility.
He has some coursework to complete this summer before he can be eligible to play in 2010-11.
He is the eighth recruit for next season and second point guard added after California high schooler Bobby Miles.

Holy crap. I thought we couldn't recruit good basketball players to Hawaii? Gib has done so, and with very little time too.

Taking into account all that UNR, NMSU, and USU have lost, I'd say we will be in the thick of the WAC race........for years to come. Lock Gib up!uhwarrior23 wrote:

Re: JUCO guard Salter commits to UH basketball team
we finally have some real d1 talent.
we really only had a few players that were real d1 talent over the past few years. nash was able to recruit a couple of gems like flemings and zane johnson. but for the most part, most of his recruits didn't even get offers from other d1 schools.
we don't know how this class will eventually shape up, but at least we know that these guys were recruited by d1 schools and appear to be legit d1 talent.
barnes (liberty), salter (auburn) and jaoquim (nebraska) all signed elsewhere before committing to hawaii.
thomas (southern miss), coleman (boise, portland), brumfield (san jose) all had offers from other d1 schools.
combine with zane johnson (transfer from arizona), dwain williams (if he comes back, transfer from providence) with thompson and amis, who we know can play at the d1 level.
we finally have a legit d1 team that will compete for the top spot in the wac.

Don't mean to rain on the parade but everyone in this class has work to do to be eligible to play this season. I think that is why Gib was able to get players with this type of talent. I think this may turn out to be a decent class for the WAC which I am very happy about but each player that we got has a reason why they were still available. Either way I will support the team I just don't want everyone on this board getting upset with Gib should a few players fall through and then a few players not live up to expectations.

Gib is going to open up a can of whoopa$$ on the WAC and any team that gets in his way especially the MWC. This should be a very exciting first year under Gib. Time will tell.

yes, i agree. i fully expect one or two of these recruits to not make it.noasark2x2 wrote:Don't mean to rain on the parade but everyone in this class has work to do to be eligible to play this season. but with 8 recruits, even if a couple don't make it, it will still be a great class.
