Update on Hittle (08/18/05)

Post by 808 »

From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (Hawaii Beat):

Rainbow Wahine's Hittle continues to improve

Tara Hittle, the sophomore outside hitter for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, continues to recover from a grade-2 sprain of her right ankle and has shown improvement daily, according to UH trainer Tara Humphreys.
X-rays taken Monday showed no fracture. Hittle has not practiced since suffering the injury in the waning moments of Friday's practice.

Humphreys said the rehabilitation for a grade-2 sprain is 1-2 weeks. The Rainbow Wahine open the season on Aug. 26 against preseason No. 1 Nebraska in Omaha, Neb.

I have a question for discussion. I overheard at the opening practice that the travel roster for the NACWAA is limited to 12 players. I don't know if that's true, but IF that's really the case, which 4 players currently on the roster do they leave home (I'm not including the 2 walkons that recently made the team because I assume they wouldn't be traveling if there is that limitation)? IF there is a limit, do you bring along injured players like Hittle and Sanders (still not sure of the status of her foot injury) who might be limited in their contributions or do you bring along other players who might be further down on the depth charts?

Traveling squad for AVCA/NACWAA picked strictly by history of past performances, and status as a Wahine recruit:

OHs Boogaard, Keefe, Houston, Mason, Arnott
MBs Gregory, Thomas, Prince
Setters Kamana’o, Thurlby
Libero Watanabe
DS Woolford or Ong (which one is stepping up at practice; however, I'm leaning towards Woolford because of Hittle's injury...need another Libero on the traveling squad)

Plays all rotations: Kamana'o, Boogaard, Arnott
? back row defense: Keefe, Houston, Mason, Prince, Gregory, Thomas
Subbed out after serving: Prince, Mason
Subbed after rotating in back-row: Gregory, Thomas
DS, serving specialist: Woolford or Ong, Thurlby. Three of 'em will be utitilized more in the back-row because of Hittle's absence.
Can also play MB: Houston, HS was a MB, plus trained as MB for WJNT this summer.

Stays home:

Sanders, reportedly not 100%, ? injury.
Hittle, why risk aggravating her injured ankle, if she’s not 100%.
Woolford or Ong
Walk-ons Blood, Kitaguchi, and Lee

Update on Hittle: Seen bearing full-weight on her injured ankle on TV last evening. Bodes well for the Wahine...she's an intergal part of the Wahine's success this season. However, will she be able to run, jump, pivot on that ankle by next week? Will Coach Shoji risk further injury by playing Tara if she's <100%? Pure speculations, but just part of the hype on a sure-to-be promising season. Go Wahine! JMHO

Glad to see Hittle getting better quickly. If she isn't 100% I doubt Shoji will risk playing her or if she does play she might be limited to backrow duties. That's assuming she's on the travel roster.

808, there is a travel squad size limit. But the 12 limit might only be for regular season matches. In the post season, certainly for the Final 4, the squad limit is, or at least was, 15. I don't know what the rules are for preseason matches.
