Wrestling 2016 *wrestling and speculation - (no more bitching & moaning)

Post by FoxMulder »

The other one is wasted with what seems to be a bunch of ongoing complaints and arguments. I don't mind it but it'd be nice to have a topic with just the wrestlers and wrestling.

Purpose of this topic thread: p4p opinions, possible matchups, updates on tournaments and matches, team and individual speculation, and that type stuff.

You wrestling guys are really amazing. Surprised there isn't a thread about basketball. OK: Someone said on the other thread that Baldwin might unseat Iolani's boys and Kamehameha's girls at States. Any truth to that? It would be really unreal if the same school wins both crowns. Baldwin wasn't a wrestling power, right? What makes them so hot this year? (I'm not saying that in a sarcastic way; I'm just wondering how a school can be a wrestling power out of the blue like that, with both the boys and the girls.)

Yes Baldwin looks to have a solid team this year and has always had a few solid wrestlers in the past but this year seems to have a bigger lineup of studs. Not sure why Baldwin has such a better team this year but it is interesting. Only 2 years ago Lahinaluna become the first outer island team to win a wrestling state title. If Baldwin wins the team title I wonder if this is the end of Oahu's dominance in wrestling.

How was Pac-5 scored for the Maui tourney?

Seems they had a few placers, but didn't show up anywhere on the team standings.

Garner Ivey is not a precursor for the "State Title", don't get it twisted. Moanalua took 2nd and the East has not been competitive at states in recent times. In the OIA it will be someone from the West but the gap from 1st to 2nd is pretty big and Iolani is clearly the front runner and perhaps Kamehameha pulling up 2nd. Lahaina no longer the dominant force on Maui is not surprising as Baldwin did better in states last year. The rest of the neighbor islands wont be in the team hunt maybe individual champions and that is the best they can hope for.

Oahu has dominated the sport and will continue in 50 years Oahu got all but 1.

Lets see how everyone does at officials and than the adjustments that will be made from team to team. It will be way more telling than all the sloppiness we have been seeing so far.

I don't understand why Iolani is the front runner.

Would you consider Baldwin, Moanalua, Kapolei, Campbell, or Waianae the front runner?

They return the most state placers and returnees period.
They return:
Nishigaya (3rd)
Watase (5th)
Angelo(5th)
Pascua(2nd)
Fautanu(2nd)
Yamashiro(1st)
Takenaka(2nd 2yrs ago)

7 that have placed and 4 have been in the finals. That is ridiculous. Baldwin only had 4 placers total last year and I think only 1 returned. Moanalua 4 placed and 3 returned. Kapolei 2 returned, Campbell 3 returned, Waianae 1 returned. Iolani has a pretty distinct starting advantage. Nothing is for sure, but geez.

Oh. OK. That specific info clears up the thinking for me.

The girls will be a way more interesting race:
School - placers(some schools had pretty good back ups as well last year that could have placed)

Kamehameha: 3- 4
Lahainaluna: 5
Pearl City: 3
Roosevelt: 3
Kapolei: 5
Waianae: 3

Moanalua and Baldwin has a solid girls squad as well and represented well in Maui this last weekend. It should be a fun season.

Any predictions on boys/girls for Official's this weekend?

In the interest of getting discussion going, here is my list of contenders for the Official's crown. Disclaimer: I am only guessing at weight classes in a lot of instances. Feel free to correct me if you know better. Starting with the boys:
106: ??
113: Stalcup(LEI) v Pagurayan(KAP)
120: Nitta(MIL) v Santos(CAM)
126: Cabanban(STL) v Stefanelli(PUN)
132: Estrella(LAH) v Terukina(CAM)
138: Keliinoi(WAN) v Wusstig(MOA)
145: Mimura(P5) v Angelo(IOL)
152: Cooper(PC) v Mair(KAS)
160: Pascua(IOL) v Kim(MIL)
170: Gouveia(BAL) v Kikuyama(PC)
182: Bito(MOA) v Fautana(IOL)
195: Ferreira(BAL) v Whitehead(KAH)
220: Kaahahanui(MOL) v Oto(BAL)
285 Yamashiro(IOL) v Alo(KAH)

Teams: 1 - Iolani, 2 - Baldwin, 3 - Moanalua
Take these with a grain of salt. Most are probably even at the wrong weight class. Just want to get some discussion started. Excited about this weekend though!
