He's not the AD. Article states that Wade Okamura is still AD. JJ is taking the position of director of athletics and development. What's the difference between the two? Hell if I know.

Such are the financial differences that Saint Louis can add on another layer of administration, versus public schools paying only peanuts to their coaches and staff.

Actually, the only high-school that can afford that kind of extravagance is Kamehameha, which is one of the richest high-schools in the nation. St Louis isn't exactly rolling in dough; they have to rely heavily on their alumni to help cover costs each year. They can't really afford another layer of admin; it's going to be hard to explain to the alumni making donations. So, would it be correct to assume that Jones is leaving Kapolei? I'm assuming that now that he's taken this position at St Louis, surely he doesn't plan to remain OC at Kapolei.

@EITSwarrior: My guess is that Okamura takes care of the everyday "nuts and bolts" and logistics of overseeing all the sports teams at St Louis, while Jones will be into strategic long-range planning of St Louis' athletic program. I think Okamura is a '73 St Louis alumnus, and has been around the St Louis athletic program--particularly baseball--since the early-'80s or so. For a number of years recently he was also vars softball coach for St Louis' sister school, Sacred Hearts.

Unreal... The definition of DISLOYAL some people never change... typical HAOLE style they only care about themselves.. Im so sick of hearing about this guy. Isn't everyone else? He said he wanted to coach Kapolei because he wanted to help "teach and mold" Taulia Tagovailoa... imagine how Taulia feels? Same way the state of Hawaii felt when he bolted for SMU. Hawaii should be fed up with his BS. I dont mind people going for better opportunities. But dont feed the state and the kids LIES. Just tell the truth. I want to coach to get back into it. UH knows the scum that i am and wont take me back, SMU wont take me back, theres no way i get into the NFL so thats why im coaching at kapolei... But dont use the kids cause in the end the young kids at kapolei just got a dose of what the entire state dealt with in 2007. Local people know better. Thats why the saying goes, dont trust a haole cause at the end of the day they don't care about anyone else but themselves.

@Baller Hawk: Well, you were really blunt. So, he's bad enough at coaching that he wouldn't get a college HC position? I'm not trying to challenge you; it's just that I was under the impression that he was a pretty good coach. Well, if what you're saying about his "style" is true, I wonder how St Louis alumni feel about him being at St Louis now. This might be another reason why Lee and Jones might clash. Lee is about as local as you can get: Born and raised here, Kalani grad, even ran for OHA. Hope there'll be no tensions. I'd like to think the best of Jones; I'm sure he doesn't dislike locals. Didn't he like that female UH volleyball player, the local girl who's a Kamehameha alumna? Had that Hawaiian last-name that starts with a "K."

@HS Football Fanatic - i never said he couldn't get another HC job in CFB. I dont think he could get into the NFL is what i said. But now that you mention it.. I dont think he could get a HC at a real D1 school. If another school was to take a look at JJ. They would see that he got turned down by the UH... Right now I think a D1 program would look at his overall record which isnt very good, they look at his track record which is REALLY BAD and they would move on to the next candidate. Last year UH was so desperate and they didn't want to deal with the can of worms that JJ would bring.
Thats one thing Ive always and will always RESPECT about Cal Lee and Ron Lee. They were always LOYAL to Hawaii. When JJ bolted they still stayed under Mack. That's LOCAL STYLE.. RESPECT

@Baller Hawk: Interesting. Well, I guess I may have been overestimating Jones all along. But, things are what they are, and now Jones is at St Louis. I'm still kind of surprised that he took a non-coaching position that isn't even exclusively about football. Although, of course, at St Louis School, almost everything is about football.

@HS Football Fanatic - Isn't Saint Louis keeping their AD? They are just making another spot for JJ?
I bet Saint Louis is just locking JJ up and keeping him on the back burner until Cal Lee retires. The other thing I bet is that JJ is there more for Football recruiting purposes than anything else. If there is one thing that JJ is good at besides breaking promises to the people of Hawaii is recruiting. I bet his number 1 job there for now while Cal Lee is still the coach is to recruit the Kahuku QB Sol Jay Maiava and bring him to SL....

I don't know why people are bashing his loyalty. He wasn't the head coach, and no one can deny that he helped bring Kapolei to heights never reached before. It would have been disloyal if he left the students during the season, but he waited until after the season to make his move. He is not being brought in by the Saint Louis for football, but to raise money for facility improvements and financial aid that are needed. If you recall, the Gerber Field House was demolished, but never replaced. In order for the school to expand, a new gym must be built to accommodate all of the PE classes and team sports that were once held in the Gerber facility.

I believe there are two things we're missing for all this to make sense...first, Cal Lee probably done considering they said JJ would have the opportunity to take over as HC if Lee left and he wanted the position. Second, maybe he's not leaving Taulia. They already stated that Taulia is not transferring, maybe Taulia is leaving JJ. Could Taulia be moving to Bama with Tua and his family? Maybe these are two pieces not announced yet that was part of this sudden decision.

.jones was already at St. Louis last year helping..He was waiting for Hawaii to
Pick him which they didn't..he then ask Cal for a coaching spot..Tuas dad heard of this and asked him to take over his job at kapolei for a year so he could concentrate on Tuas recruiting. Nalu supposed to go back this year but heard they might move hmmmm maybe to Alabama or Utah...this was always only gonna be a one year deal at kapolei..

JJ doing fundraising with the St Louis alumni and local businesses? I don't know. Maybe he might have changed his personality? Someone who is a long time member of Na Koa told met years ago that JJ was a really arrogant man. We'll see. Hope for the best for St Louis. I don't see any clash with Cal Lee and JJ. If Cal didn't want JJ the deal would have never happened. I think that this position is for a head coach in waiting type of situation.
