The Maui guys "get it". Not necessarily just because they write about wrestling, but because most things they do is about finding a way to do broad reporting about what's going on in the community, with their "angles" on stories about the MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. To that end, they take their responsibility as a media serving the community refreshingly seriously.

Here on Oahu, it's about the glamour sports. On one hand, can't blame them. The market economics and professional peer pressure seem to push the reporters in that direction.

On the other hand, it's kinda pathetic. The primary focus is on the king sport that is no doubt causing long term brain damage, the scope and depth of which only the surface has been scratched, I fear. And the secondary (at least when it comes to boys) is the sport most kids in Hawaii are too short to make a difference in beyond high school.

Not that football and basketball aren't as important in the grand scheme of things, or to those playing or have kids playing.

It's just that, they're only really as important as all other sports, and simply and only JUST AS important to those playing and watching, as they are to others playing and watching other sports.

@twnoexcuses: Yeah, I think football and basketball are king in almost every state. And you're right, Hawaii kids are usually shorter than kids in the other states. I think that's why the good mainland teams manhandle even Hawaii's best teams in pre-season high-school basketball tourneys here. But, basketball is still hot here in Hawaii, and the best Hawaii high-school teams are generally competitive against each other. At the high schools, of course there are so many sports, and kids in any particular sport are, of course, engrossed in that sport. I've heard high-school kids say things like, "Soccer is life." I really haven't heard much about the other sports. I haven't heard much even about baseball, which is supposed to be "America's pastime," and #3 behind football and basketball. I suspect that in the high schools, each sport has its own "orbit" of kids. Another problem in the high-schools is that not all sports are spectator sports. Take riflery, for example. That's definitely not a spectator sport. Therefore, it will never be able to compete with football in terms of fan support. Golf may be a spectator sport, but is it a spectator sport on the high-school level? I doubt it. Heck, I know of one high-school here which once had as few as two(!) kids on the golf team.

Baldwin emerges as the early contender to dethrone Iolani Boys and Kamehameha Girls in the team race. I wonder if they are bringing their full squad to officials next week...

Why don't you provide some tournament information besides saying Molokai is tough and posting the Maui news results?

U mad bro? Haha all I said was I thought Molokai had a tougher than usual team this year. I don't see where it says I can't post my opinion so don't get your panties in a bunch. I didn't say Molokai was gonna take states or that they were even a contender so why would what I said offend you so much?
