So in a short interview Aiea's Coach Wendell Say apparently feels that the OIA should go back to the
East/West format. I would like to see that, would you?

Re: Do you agree with Coach Say? I do!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the current format was drawn up to create more competition right? Weren't people grumbling that Big Red and da Govs had it easy in the east while the west teams beat each other up?
Imho, i think there was a hidden agenda which came to fruition when both Kaiser and mililani became sudden powerhouses overnight. Not to say mililani didnt have good teams in the past, cause they did. But they didnt have anything close to the physicality they have now. A physicality much needed to compete with Big Red and da govs.
Cause in all honesty, the biggest most glaring difference between the old format and the current is that the trojans have leaped to the top. Big Red and da govs are still just as competitive and in most cases dominant as before.

I wouldn't doubt you're right about them having a hidden agenda. For me personally, I'd like to see the old East/West format just because I played in that era. Old rivalries renewed. No traveling in the traffic that we face nowadays.

This just goes to show that no matter what, if you've got two divisions, one will always be stronger than the other.

I would like to see the OIA group their divisions by geography again. There are truths to human existence.
1. Can you beat your neighbor...well then you should be allowed to play your neighbor every year and not get reshuffled to another made-up division every two years. All that is going on now is that you are killing neighborhood rivalries that will lower ticket sales because you can't count on people to show up when you play that school down the road because that school down the road isn't on the schedule for the next two or maybe more years. Some fans live for rivalries and if it gets canceled by redoing the divisions.well....I think it's a loss in ticket sales and fan interest.Look at the attendance numbers when available ...most of them are in the hundreds, not thousand or thousands like I remember from the 60's and 70's.
2.You have to pay to play..... I would guess that budgets are going up for transportation to the point where the OIA is going to go back to geography just to keep the transportation costs in line with the available budget money. This is not a small consideration. I read an article recently that said that almost 25 percent of high school leagues around the USA have cut out numerous sports due to budgetary constraints....football included.

I wonder how much of an effect the new format has on the budget. I think the lack of old rivalries and far travel would put a damper on the revenue.unpaid wrote:I would like to see the OIA group their divisions by geography again. There are truths to human existence.

When they went to the new format, they didn't think travel costs were a problem IIRC.Naue wrote:I wonder how much of an effect the new format has on the budget. Hawaii has got everything wrong.
The OIA and ILH should not exist. The Divisions should be based on school population. That is how high school football is done on the mainland. Hawaii will never learn. It will solve all problems. It will solve the "Iolani" problems, the "East being too easy" problems, etc.
I'll write an article about this later.

Ain't the east teams better than the west right now!? Kahuku,Farrington,Kaiser and kailuaIFeelThat¿ wrote:Hawaii has got everything wrong.

Don't mean to go back to this can of bees, but what would solve the Iolani problem (aside from your suggestion) is if their FB team hired somebody like Coach Yamashiro of Maryknoll baseball, Coach Ladouceur of De La Salle FB, or Coach McKnight of Mater Dei (CA) basketball.IFeelThat¿ wrote:Hawaii has got everything wrong.

But in all honesty, finding a way to make an ILH-OIA merger work is harder than finding a condescending internet troll that AIN'T a virgin and hasn't got a single friend!

I think you can cross Kaiser off that list until further notice. They lost to the "weaker" West teams Kapolei and Aiea, who have a combined overall record of 4-8.harus0ra wrote:Ain't the east teams better than the west right now!? Kahuku,Farrington,Kaiser and kailua
If anyone's gonna push to revert back to the old East/West format, this is the season to do it. East Kailua is doing very well while West Leilehua and Campbell seem to be in rebuilding years. The past several seasons, there's no way you could argue that the East was top-to-bottom higher quality than the West. The West has been, up until this season, deeper and more competitive from week-to-week, game-to-game.
Re: Do you agree with Coach Say? I do!
So true about Kaiser. When Miano got pressured out and the recruiting stopped, so did Kaiser. If York leaves and the recruiting stops at Mili, they would become mediocre even with a large school population.bandits1 wrote:I think you can cross Kaiser off that list until further notice. Re: Do you agree with Coach Say? I do!
I disagree with Coach Say. After this season, there will be a reshuffling of the Red, Blue, and DII divisions.
I think the Division reshuffling, with the additions of Radford and Nanakuli into the DI Red and Blue mix, and teams like Aiea and Mckinley moving back into D-II, will create more parity than ever before.
The league's actually play out better than we could have ever thought. The top 2 teams (Mililani and Kahuku) is on a crash course to meet in the OIA championship with some good teams acting as potential upset specialists in the postseason (Farrington/Kailua/Waianae).
The late games has nothing to do with the current alignment, but rather the horrible bus contract situation the Hawaii DOE is currently working with...
