Re: 2014 Wrestling Speculation and Nonsense
Nice preview from east side.
However, I think were gonna see Kamaka at 145 and Jarmillio at 152, everything else looks pretty solid. Z Daimond and Ursua might be the match of the year if they meet up in the state finals, both have a wrestling style that's gonna put on a show.
138 seems like it could possibly be the deepest weight, with multiple state placers and some upcoming wrestlers from the ILH.
145 I think were gonna see Corbett take his first state title, if crimmins is at 145 and isnt worrying about trying to look like Justin Bieber he will be the top contender
Lets keep this topic going

Made it to the pre-season tournament at Aiea High School today. Good wrestling action from veterans and newcomers. On the boys side Blake Cooper from Pearl city was the main center of attention. He looked a bit faster than last season. The power game was there as well as the patience to wait for the best positioning and opportunity. Kamehameha didn't do hydration so they were not allowed to participate. No sign of Punahou either.
Re: 2014 Wrestling Speculation and Nonsense
Parugryuan?(Kap) will contend at 106 as a freshman while beating aragon(moan) and Tagami at 113 yesterday. Illaban(Kap) wrestled up at 119 or so and looked strong while walking through his round robin bracket. He will be at 113 for season, so 113 could be stacked with Terukina, Ikei, Saribay and Tagami. Will see where Ng and Balagso end up as well.
No surprises in upper weights other then Coopper(PC), Corbett(Rad) and Williams(Cast) dominating their brackets.
I. Diamond(Mil) was back from injury and looked good also.

My money's on Punahou. Kam has 3 returning starters lead by Hoshino and Terukina. Punahou has Lee, Urabe, Rosen, Crimmins, Valdez, Agmata, as well as Kato, Barfield, and Nakao.
Does anyone know who Kam will fill their their spots with?

Punahou has 1 thing going for them with their current lineup. These wrestlers were around in 2012 and participated with the best lineup the state has seen in at least a decade. If some of that swagger has rubbed off on them then they will be a tough team to contend with. However at this point I only see Crimmins contending. Valdez, Agmata and Rosen have yet to prove they belong in the conversation. Kato, Barfield and Nakao need to step up and realize that what they do finally matters.
For Kamehameha it remains to be seen if anyone else besides Hoshino and Terukina will step up. I'll wait until officials before I make predictions. I'd like to see Hoshino bump to 171 and contends for a title. I don't see him defeating Cooper at 160. Terukina has gone through the freemen initiation and I predict his father has gotten him ready for a championship run.

My Picks for the ILH.
In general this is perhaps the most down the ILH has been in a very long time, that can be attributed to a couple of things ILH coaches getting to comfortable and not providing the wrestlers with the essentials to be competitive. The OIA schools have made the most of clubs and wrestling throughout the year. You have one shoe in champ for the ILH (Terrao) other than that you could be looking at Public Schools sweeping the rest.
Punahou - by a mile although its been a long time since Punahou has entered the season without a returning state champ, Crimmins got into the finals by star treking his way in, "To boldly go where no man WANTED to go" that would be Terrao's weight class, they have had the good fortune to have Oney run the best program in the state over the last 8-10 years. They will not lose it in a day, Honda well the jury is still out on him but they are clear leaders in the ILH.
Iolani - is a Program on the rise and will be a force to be reckoned with! The coaches have dedicated the time it takes to be successful and the athletes 90% are in clubs wrestling all year long. If they can produce a full line up this year their young coach maybe looking at winning the ILH.
Pac5 - Gotta give credit where the credit is due! Mr. Terrao played a huge role in the success that they have earned over the last several years this should of been the pay off year. The athletes all put in the work, stay on the mat and win matches. With a full lineup they should beat Kamehameha and give the upper two teams a run for their money in any dual tournament.
Kamehameha - is the totally opposite of what Punahou once was, Sure they won the title last year but one can make the argument that the margin of victory was yet another in a long line of under achieving moments. Not saying that they don't have talent because they do but they are going to be in a world of hurt this year.
St.Louis - A team that is spiraling downward at warp speed and shows no signs of stopping. Perhaps one of the most tragic things to witness in Hawaii wrestling over the last 10-12 years. Will they ever show signs of past glory? Not this year and it looks like it will be a very long time
St.Francis - A team that does not belong fielding a wrestling team based off of last year. If you only have 3 varsity wrestlers perhaps it would be better to wrestle with Pac-5 untill your program can start walking on its own. At a minimum stay to inter and JV and work those kids up.

#5 Campbell- Returning runner up Tosetia and state medalists Natividad and Hao will lead this team, but Gallarde, Taua and Lundazo will need to step up to give this team a chance to finish in the top 5. Runner-up Putnam is wrestling for Blair Acedemy, the#1 ranked team in the nation.
#4 Mililani- Although they will be missing some weights, this team could finish top 3 if Dominique, Jimminez and 120lber can win in the backside. Diamonds, Akeo and Furuta should be favorites to make finals. This team is always mentally and physically prepared.
#3 Punahou- Returning runner-up Crimmins and state place winners Valdez and Urabe will lead punahou, and Kato, Lee, Agmata and Rosen will add depth. Will they respond to Coach Honda's philosophy and coaching style to contend for the title?
#2 Pearl City- Ursua, Cooper and Kikuyama are solid, but the depth this team has makes them dangerous. Rivera, Lee, Vaa and heavy weight are athletic and experienced and Baylen Cooper will add to the Cooper trophy case. If they don't disappear in states like previous years, they have a chance.
#1 Lahainaluna- They return five state medalist which includes state champ, jaramillo and runner-ups Balagso, Chism and Mataafa. Wigzell, Mowat and others will need to contribute to give Lahainaluna their first ever state title. They had a chance 3 or 4 years ago, but could not win in the 3rd and 5th place matches.

Re: 2014 Wrestling Speculation and Nonsense
With the addition of 182 and 195, any ideas what to look for there?
170 Returns Tano(PUN), Williams(CAS), Kiehm(IOL)
189 returns Paul Joe(PC) as a state place winner(5th) and Moses Wiseman (KPO) who had wins over Putnam(CAM) and finished ahead of Joe 2x last year.
Any 215 lbers dropping to 195?
Not a lot of wrestlers returning in that range. Any ideas?
Any one else?
