One has to wonder how this came about after what was essentially a nuclear winter of OOS games (lack of) for Oahu teams. Saint Louis will apparently also play Santa Margarita (CA), who finished #31 in the nation according to rivals.com. It is also rumored that Saint Louis will play THREE OOS opponents the year after.

Is it ESPN? A big donation? Is one or are both of these games part of a promoted event (like De La Salle and Poly the last time)?

I'll hope this game doesn't suffer the same fate as the planned Mission Viejo-Kahuku affair last year.

Yup. Venue/TV play a big factor in the survival of these games. If I'm not mistaken, the plan was for Viejo to go up to the North Shore? I don't think that would've panned out well for the investors.

But at least it looks like important parts of the Saint Louis community are putting their heads together to compete with Punahou. The very survival of the school is dependent on it.

I hate to say it but considering Bishop Gorman is comfortable playing Servite, I don't think St. Louis has much of a chance if they play anything close to what they played in 2011.

FAB 50 Offseason Primer: Santa Margarita

January, 11, 2012

By Mark Tennis

2011 Season: 13-2, CIF Division I state bowl champion, finished No. 27 in the POWERADE FAB 50.

Projected 2012 Preseason Ranking: Top 15. The Eagles won’t be in front of De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) to start next season since the Spartans have won three straight CIF Open Division state bowl games, but in the preseason rankings are a lock to be No. 2 in California and No. 1 for Southern California.

Team Strengths: Nine starters return on offense with four on defense. Quarterback Johnny Stanton (6-3, 220) was one of five finalists for the Cal-Hi Sports Mr. Football State Player of the Year honor after passing for 2,439 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 1,528 yards and 25 scores. Also returning will be running back Ryan Wolpin, who piled up 27 touchdowns and rushed for 1,637 yards. A massive offensive line will miss ESPNHS All-American Max Tuerk, but still will have Riley Sorenson (6-5, 315), Erik Bunte (6-7, 301) and Dane Crane (6-3, 295). A sophomore to watch next season could be Riley's younger brother Will Sorenson (6-5, 325). On defense, the top returnee is safety Connor O’Brien, who led the team in interceptions with eight.

Saw Santa Margarita play on FSN West and Prime Ticket a few times last season in CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs. The strength of the team is their read-option ball-possession running game behind a huge Oline that wears down opposing defenses.

However there's currently alot of turmoil surrounding the Santa Margarita program with its legendary HC Harry Welch recently placed on administrative leave (because of alleged assault on a player by a member of the coaching staff).....after two (2) assistant coaches had already been fired for marijuana use.

Dana White pumped millions of UFC dollars back to the school. Wonder if St Louis will be getting some transfers over the summer.
