Every winter the bear hibernates, if the lion or the gazelle try to wake him up in the morning before his time, they better WATCH OUT! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

The size of the team doesn't matter. You can have a team of 1000 people, but there would be a possibility that none of them could qualify for States. It all comes down to how many athletes qualify for states, and how well they do. Also every team is only allowed 2 runners per event in the State meet. So the authorities have already made it easier for the smaller teams to compete. In the end it all comes down to the work these athletes put in during the season, not the size of the team.

Size does have an influence for Punahou because they have the most qualifiers year in and year out.

But it is quality not quantity as seen in 2009 when Saint Louis only had 4 athletes score and won the championship.

Also if you wanna get technical check the record books, Punahou has the most athletes every year and have the majority of the state championships...

There are 16 events in track and field, but if you only have 16 athletes come out, you have less of a chance of getting enough quality athletes that would make it all the way the states, let alone be able to fill every event, but if you get a 1000 athletes you have more to pick & choose from and to develop for each event. Your not going to win with just quantity, you have to have the coaching for the various events also, but even the best coaches can't make a state championship team if they are only getting a small amount of athletes turning up for the sport. When Saint Louis won in 2009 it was with 4 scoring athletes, but they had 9 entered (including relay teams) and they had more on the team during the season, the same as when Leilehua won with 5 athletes in 1983, they had a full team, so numbers do make a difference.
If a 1000 athletes show up and you can only enter 2 or 3 in each event, then you have more spare quality sprinters, jumpers, throwers and distance runners that can take up the slack in other events, and you don't have to worry about over-extending your top athletes trying to score in multiple events. That's the advantage of having large numbers of athletes; it's not what you see at states at the end of the season, it helps the preparation and planning the coaches make at the start of the season. If you have ten sub 11 second 100m sprinters and can only use 3, or 4 for relays, the others can be moved to the 200, 400, or long jump, otherwise their season ends when the regular season meets with limited entries, start. A small team coach doesn't have those types of choices, and they have to gear their workouts at the start of the season to be able to accomodate their top athletes to compete in multiple events if they are looking at winning as a team.

How about you go and take a look at the numbers from last year. Punahou (atleast for the boys team) didn't have the most qualifiers, and in many events they were outnumbered. for example the distance races, Punahou only had 2 for the 800 meter, and 1 for the 3000 and 1500. While Kamehameha had 3 in the 800, 2 in the 1500 and 2 in the 3000. None qualified for long jump, triple jump or high jump. they had 1 guy for discus. 1 qualified for the 100 and 200 meter dash. 2 for the 400, but only 1 ran. and they had the 2 relay teams. Of couse an extremely small team with only about 10 maybe 20 runners cant compete with a team like punahou unless they are extremely talented lyk the 09 team from STL. However teams like Kamehameha, and St. Louis (which has a lot more runners now) can compete with Punahou, and numbers aren't a factor its all talent. Because Kamehameha had more runners qualify for States last year then Punahou, and the size of punahous team is just an excuse thrown around by people trying to make a reason why they couldnt beat Punahou.

Just like i said before. an excuse for why people couldn't beat Punahou. That's just a list of who won. Doesn't have any statistics about how many people were on the team, or how many people participated in the state championship from punahou.

You may get your wish. Even though Punahou has the numbers and they will, they also will be without Ashley Satterwhite . That will hurt both relays and pull points away from the 100 and 200. The top girls sprinter looks like Hinkel from Radford. Just subtracting and adding makes it look very close. Then add to that going over to Maui the points they and the other Islands will pull away you just my get your wish. This will be one of the most exciting state meets ever on the girls side. Go Radford!

au contraire noguts ... the top returning female sprinter is Raion Black of Christian Academy

...or some as yet unknown runner from the freshmen ranks or transferring from out-of-state. Only results from the first few meets of the season will give us a peek at the part of the state picture. I can't wait for the season to start!

I just have a feeling Hinkle is going to have a great year, just a gut feeling. We will see times in both boys and girls events usually seen only on the mainland. I to can hardly wait.!!!! PS not to forget the girls pole vault, look for Felix to go over 12 feet.

A lot of noise was made about 4.3 forty times at football combines last summer. My comment at the time was that, if we have football players who can show that kind of speed, then where are all of the 10.4 to 10.6 100-meter dash athletes we should also have.

I wish the kids well,but show me something.....either adults are fooling us or there are kids out there who do have that kind of speed in Hawaii...just show me!
