I believe that the last time the state meet was on Maui the newspaper said there were 11,000 in attendance. It would not surprise me that with the interest in some events such as the boys 1500 that between 11,000 and 13,000 would be possible. I think the interest level this year is real high. Look at these these other events. Girls pole vault will draw a large crowd, could go over 12' boys 800, girls 800, girls 1500, girls 400, girls 1500, girls and boys 3000, girls and boys 4x400 relay. It will be a great state meet, there will be more than one state meet record broken. Check this out.The WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be at the University of Hawaii from May 10 – 13 (yes, Tuesday through Friday). The probable schedule is attached – consider it official unless notified otherwise. So you can watch track for two weeks,

If Kamehameha-Kapalama and Leilehua end up going for the Boys Team Title at States, then Thibodeau and Martinez may have to sacrifice and run multiple events, making a record attempt out of the question, like Redmond Tutor had to do for Kahuku in 2006. ...or they could attempt it in the Trials like Joey Bunch did in the 800m in 1983, but its much harder now with back-to-back trials and finals.

Leilehua has a slim chance at winning the state title.
Also, Magarito isnt the only above average distance runner they have to offer.
Estrada may also make an impact, such as Magaritos younger brother.

Also, I found your article on the so called 11,000 in attendence, your wrong.
It was 6,000, still a big amount for a track meet though.

You never know what a team is capable of until the season is underway and you can identify their top performing team members. Leilehua has a tradition of having individuals who single-handedly affect their overall team performance. In 1983 they had Koldene Walsh getting 4 gold medals in the 100, 200, 4x100 relay and long jump along with 4 other teammates medaling in throws, distance and sprints to win the boys State Championship. That was under the old scoring system where relays were worth almost twice as much as individual events. In 1988 Adrian Murrell transferred in from Germany in the middle of the season, running state record times and leading Leilehua to dominance in the OIA and States in '88 and '89. So keep an eye out for those teams that usally benefit from student tranfers (those with Military ties).
Also, a team that is capable of dominating one side of the running events, either distance or sprints (3 events each), and scoring in a few field events or relays has a shot at winning the State Championship. Under the current scoring system, relays have become devalued and have less of an impact. Typically a team scoring in the high 50s to mid 60s is able to win the State Championship, so the ability to gain points by having multiple athletes in the 3 distance or sprint events will get you into the high 40s to mid 50s, then its just a matter of having enough athletes qualified to collect a few nickle and dime points in other events.

i think if Margarito, Pierce, and Jordan train hard enough, running a sub 4 time will be easy, and even if they run a tactical race they still can run a sub 4 without too much effort. im thinking all 3 of them will run the 15 and 3k, which means they will all by equally tired for the 3k after the 15. since they probably wont run the 800, who are some possible winners?

If they all train for it, running a sub-4 may eventually come easy for them, but if they are all competing for 1st place, they race may not come that easy, and may end up causing them to sacrifice the 3K. In 1996 unbeaten Pac-5 Senior Matt Stevens faced challenges from Mililani teammates Jason Noriega and Shawn Gallup, who elected to run single events in the 1600m and 3200m, where Noriega forced Stevens to go "all out" to win the 1600 and had nothing left for the 3200 against Gallup.

although they might be totally tired after the 15, they all wont lose their spots in the 3k since there arent really any others who are close to their speed in that event

I don't think Jordan, Pierce and Margarito will double in all the events. But no doubt the 8, 15 and 3 on the boys side will be fast. 1500-Pierce vs Jordan 8-Alex vs Jordan and 3 Pierce vs Margarito

i don't think jordans running the 8 this year. just the 3 and 15 so they will all be running the same events and equal advantages at winning. so pierce, margarito, and jordan. what about the 400?

unless margarito only runs the 3....

You figure the all should be capable doing the 15 and 3K, since both distances combined are shorter than the 3 miles they run in XC. True that they have trials the day before, but according to the rules, there will only be 2 heats, so they only have run hard enough to make top 4, with the top seeds going in seperate heats (based on the best time run in the season), they can relax in their trial heats.

It just got a little harder
News from Maui. I just heard that Dakota Grossman got beat by a new girl from Maui in a 5k race.. check out the run for the whales 5k the time was around 19:10. This will make getting to the podium at the state meet in the 1500 and the 3000 very , very hard.

Checked out the results and Dakota didn't lose...she took 1st for Female Open in 19:15.. The 2nd place runner in the division was Aspen Hirsch with a time of 19:31. Checked online and Aspen is from Kihei area. Should be pretty interesting in the MIL this year and next with State Track at War Memorial in May and State XC at Kaanapali in October. Good Luck to all you trackers who started practice yesterday. Stay healthy and run hard.

Hirsch is listed in the 16-19 yr old age group, winning that division in the 2010 Maui Marathon with 3:24, 6th female finisher overall. Maui News states "Aspen Hirsch, a 17-year-old Kihei Charter School student, runs en route to finishing sixth overall " She has also been swimming in high school meets for Kihei Charter School. She ran 20 min. beating the "MIL XC All Star" at the Ko'ie'ie Fishpond 5k Race the week before (http://www.dailymile.com/people/Aspen/entries/5109992). Haven't found any results of that race yet.
