Many of our local newpapers have limited resources to report on the myriad of athletic events occurring on any given day.

A possible option to improve the visibility of high school track and field is to have someone(s) at a meet taking photos and then submitting to the local paper with an attached, well written, balanced and informative press release.

The press release needs to be informational rather than biased.

Within the press release there should be an opportunity to introduce emerging team rivalries etc. to generate interest and to give attention to outstanding races / competitions.

Discussing this option with the local sports editor may go nowhere but it may also be successful and improve the coverage of local high school meets.

CouchQB....I totally agree with your point on local high school student-athletes in track not getting the same coverage as the other "mainstream" sports. With "running" being the biggest sport in the world by far, you would think cross country and track would receive a little more coverage during their season. Kudos to the outer island newspapers for highlighting these athletes. Of course those at the "Oahu" publication would agree the same points seen here in other posts....not enough manpower, time, interest, etc., etc. But yet we see week in and week out JV stats for all the main sports, i.e. football, basketball, baseball. Wouldn't it be nice to recognize at least the winners in each race, which I can admit I did see when I ran in the '80s. Is that too much to ask?? There are more games for the other sports that receive print than there are meets.

More to the point....please recognize the standouts in our sports (cross country and track). Refer back to the whole page layouts of OIA Red West/East all-stars, All state all-stars, etc. for Football and Basketball. Have you ever seen an all-conference, let alone an all-state all star team of cross country or track athletes??? Exactly the point. We all understand they only print what sells.....so let's sell them on our kids.

In the end we as parents, coaches, officials, and supporters are all there for the kids. I hope that hearing us cheer them on every week will let them know that they are not forgotten. Run hard and stay safe.

Look out for Raskassa Johnson, he's about 5'10 180 and will play running back and maybe some wr for us over the next few years. He's super raw as a runner, and has a good shot at qualifying for state this year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWAsOPju-E0
what is the states qualifying time (100 meter)...is it out yet??

11.9? Sure that is pretty good for a freshman, however that is not even close to state qualifying time. I dont know what list you have been looking at.

Sorry but 11.90 as a freshman isnt the hottest. Last year the BIIFs top freshman ran 11.74.
And as a freshman last year, St Louis, Tabuyo was seeded with 10.98.
But like you said, raw runner, still can be worked on.

I was there ... this kid lost almost .75 falling out of the blocks and recovered for 2nd place in 11.91 FAT ... Hilo girls team has another "one to watch" in Frosh Kundalini Nicholson-Walker ... BIIF Action kicks off next week at Kamehameha Hawaii Invitational
