Let me try to explain some surprises.

Mid-Pac:
Iolani was traveling and several teams sat runners. Notably most MPI boys and Punahou girls.

CORP:
Ryan Hobson ran the course at what I would guess is tempo pace for him. He came through the first mile in almost exactly six minutes and maintained his pace. I think he deserves his number 4 ranking on 808's list.

The course was adjusted to run up grass as opposed to dirt on the course's major hill. This produced a longer course, from what I know about 100-150m long. From what I know, the course was revised again and is now "only" 55m long. Expect slower times.

Charles Akiona of Kamehameha is a much faster runner than many give him credit for. Check the times and notice he has been consistently one of the top runners in the ILH. He also has not lost to Scharer, Yamane, and Ryan this season (all of whom are ranked by 808 higher). Additionally, he hasn't lost to Cuadrado since Iolani invite, beating him at Kaiser and Punahou invites. He was 4th at Punahou, 2nd at Mid-Pac, and 2nd at CORP. While he isn't anywhere near Thibodeau, he deserves at least a top 10 ranking. I would have him at 6 at the moment.
Additionally, Colton Sisler of Saint Louis has also been a solid runner this year. He has been in the top 6 in the ILH in every meet since Kaiser. While perhaps his front-running style will hurt him at the bigger meets, he should be considered in the top 20. I would have him between 10-15 at this moment.
Finally, I have heard rumors that Borys Pleskacz is injured. Is anyone aware of the nature of the injury and its severity? If it is so severe that he will miss states, I feel it removes Iolani from state title contention. He is an essential part to the Iolani team's success.

Punahou girls look dominant. While their pack will certainly be broken up at states, they are the undeniable favorite in my mind.

I will post my thoughts on states after all the champs results come out. Hopefully I can replicate my guessing success from last year! (check the old forum if you are curious).

Good luck to all runners this weekend.

They will cut out the far tree part on the first loop-letter D on the state course map.

Thank you, Bob! It's hard to compare times when the ILH results are so hard to find. I can't believe you manually typed in the results for two meets. Mahalo!

800: 100 to 150 M long at CORP? Minus 25 to 35 seconds to convert to a 3 mile time for last weekend's meet? I'm trying to compare the ILH to the OIA times. The Waialua course seemed short the week before last. Do you know anything about that course length?

Yes, that time approximation is roughly correct for most runners. I don't think it applies to Thibodeau, maybe 20-30 seconds for him tops.

To quote a coach regarding the Waialua course: "They are lucky if they run 2.8 miles on that course."
Perhaps exaggeration, but essentially the course is notoriously short. If I had to guess, at least 40 seconds+. I don't know the course other than from what I hear and from analyzing the times, but the course is very likely short. How much? I don't know for sure. My estimations are really just guesses.

I personally avoid comparing times across courses unless necessary. Over three miles, even subtle differences in courses can mean significant time differences. For example, in my mind, the Mid-Pac course is very similar to the Punahou course in things like elevation change, slope of the hills, pavement vs. grass, etc. The difference between the two courses is that the Mid-Pac course is run almost like the Punahou course in reverse (or vice versa). The uphill at Mid-Pac is long, but the downhill is steep. Punahou's course is the opposite. Yet, I believe the Mid-Pac course to be, in my opinion, significantly faster. Perhaps this year, the results won't show that, but I think that is because of the reduction in people running the course with many runners being held out or traveling.

If you want to make a prediction or analyze a team/individual's chances at states or even trying to match up teams, wait until after this weekend. Both teams will run at CORP, likely in similar conditions.

Thanks 800, those ranking I made were before the ILH CORPresults came out.
But, when Iolani traveled down to Big Island, after the race Borys did have ice on his foot and was taken to the awards ceremony by golf cart.
Rumor, could be a stress fracture???
OH SHUCKS sorry to Colton Sinsler, I swear i put him in my rankings

If you think manually typing in results for cross country is hard, think about how hard it is for track where there are 16 individual events. Its not so bad now that most leagues/schools are able provide results in the Meet Manager/Team Manager file format, but back when the only results you could find were from the newspapers or from photocopied handwritten meet results, it was a full time job trying to put together any kind of rankings, which was why I haven't been able to do it for the Mililani site anymore, especially after I changed jobs a few years ago. We all should appreciate the work that Bob Martin does to provide us this info. ~ Thanks Bob!

2010 Hawaii High School Girls Cross Country Girls 3-Mile Rankings
2010 Hawaii High School Boys Cross Country Girls 3-Mile Rankings

The "rankings" are based solely upon time ... I do like the discussion on this page ... some real insight here ...

Anyway, ILH XC Coordinator John Medeiros of Assets graciously provided results when asked ... I'm less well known than I thought :)

If there are any coaches out there that are interested in participating in a "Coaches Poll" of the top runners/teams in the state ... please email me ASAP bmartin@milesplit.us with your predictions, and I'll publish that ...
