Favorite Hawaii High School Offensive Lineman of All-Time

Post by T-Bone »

Who do you consider to be your favorite(s) OL of all-time in Hawaii high school football? Keep in mind that this is not necessarily who you consider to be the "best" or "top" OL, but rather who was the most memorable to you?

So many... can't remember all offhand.

1) Olin Kreutz - Saint Louis
2) Mark Tuinei - Punahou
3) Jesse Sapolu - Farrington

Man, I forgot about Pat Kesi. He was a beast!

And I want to throw in Doug Paahao from Kaiser.

Olin Kreutz! I remember when Scholastic Sports on ESPN came down to feature the St. Louis Crusaders with Olin, Darnell Arceneaux and Chris Maafala.

I believe Olin is the only player in the NFL currently with Hawaii ties that has a chance of getting into the Hall of Fame. I even have his Bears jersey and I'm not a Bears fan!

Hands down Olin Kreutz from St. Louis is my favorite OL from Hawaii. He has been a great Offensive Lineman at ever level. Should have been a much higher draft pick.

From Maui my favorite high school OL played for Maui High from 89-92 and I believe is the only OL to win MIL Offensive Player of the year, which he won his JR year in 1991. He was team captain in 1992 and a 2 time 1st team MIL all-star. He was a Kula boy that name I believe was "Richard Cua". I can't be sure about the last name as it was a long time ago.

TONIU FONOTI (Kahuku) - I've still got a bunch of his high school playoff/prep bowl VHS tapes....TOTAL domination. It was almost laughable how he just put people on their backsides on like EVERY play....and I'm not talking about weak competion but schools like Waianae and St. Louis...big boys literally smashed into the Aloha stadium turf. Had a great career at Nebraska and initially with the Chargers...too bad he couldn't control his weight in the NFL.

Others....

Kahuku; the Kemoeatu brothers, C. Naeole & T. Reed, F. Mailo, Perry, J. Fienga - all meat grinders who at the very least enjoyed solid D1 careers!!

St. Louis; O. Kruetz & T. Malepeai - one a pro bowler, the other had the talent but unfortunately not the discipline..

Iolani; B. Brostek - great career at UW and the Rams...

HPA; Max Unger - solid and versatile, headed for a long NFL career.

Kamehameha; L. Goeas, D. Parker

Kailua; S. Satele - UH all time great...anchoring raider nation's line

Roosevelt; S. Alivado (Ching) - Solid at UH...undersized but a deamon in the trenches.

FYI...Big #87 Mark Tuinei played OLB then DT for Puns, then DT for UCLA....but didn't play OT until the NFL for Cowboys.

Don't forget to add former Crusader Dominic Raiola....who played at Nebraska, and is still starting for Detroit Lions.

Toniu Fonoti - I remember in the 8th grade at Kahuku he already looked like he was going to be a big kid. He was quick for his size and
man handled the trenches his years at kahuku.

I remember the SI article came out when he was at Nebraska, my whole office (while working in the mainland) was in amazement
at how huge this kid was, his calves, fingers, head etc...He definately represented the samoans/pac. islanders in that article.
