800: You figured out where I was going! Just over 19:00 is pretty fast! So, for fun, where would you stack Grossman and Greenwell? Their times seem slower, but I don't know the outer-island courses.

That's hard to judge. I feel Grossman is better than Brady or Jenkins simply because of her dominance of them earlier this season, but since we haven't seen Greenwell race against any of these girls, it is hard to tell. All these girls, plus more, will be gunning to win it though, without a doubt. I feel that Greenwell is better on hills than the others, especially considering most Big Island courses are relatively hilly but I'm not too sure how she will do on the flats. I think I will ponder these tonight and tomorrow and try to predict next Saturday's top 10 and teams. Milrunfan and others think of yours too so we can compare ideas! I tend to miss people, so it would be nice to see some input. Plus, we need something to talk about. I won't be going to Kauai but I have a feeling I will be craving cross country until I see the results of states and get closure on the season.

If you want to compare times on a flat course, you can't get any flatter than a track. Here's the final times of the returning runners from last year's State Track 3000m Run:

1 Hailey Grossman JR Seabury 10:38.89
2 Tialana Greenwell SO Honokaa 10:48.36
3 Jenna Wong JR Iolani Girls 10:55.17
4 Sophie Curatilo SO Moanalua 10:56.53
5 Jessica Kafer FR Radford 10:57.84
6 Kimberly Pugliese SO Mililani 10:58.79
7 Kristin Ali Keith JR Mililani 11:03.34
8 Sarah Clapp JR Kaiser 11:09.72 Not Running this year
10 Athena Oldfather JR Honokaa 11:19.25

2leftfeet- Yeah track times are good, but it doesn't tell us much. Brady and Jenkins did not run the 3k at states, plus big changes can happen between May and October in someone's running ability. Also, what happened to Sarah Clapp?

I see Pierce Murphy did very well at the Mt SAC Invite this weekend, running a 16:15 on a very challenging course. I would definitely not count him out next weekend against Margarito for the individual title. Should be fun to watch!

Yeah I saw those results. It will be close but I will still give Martinez the edge though. The thirteenth place runner in Murphy's race, Luca Signore ran 15:15 to Murphy's 16:15. Why is this runner important? Signore beat Martinez by 40 seconds at Iolani Invite. Not a great comparison, since they weren't racing head to head and it has been a long time since the Iolani Invite, but in terms of making favorites, Martinez is still the one. He certainly won't dominate though, as he has done most of the season against Oahu competition.

When it comes to Martinez vs Murphy, I think home track advantage will play a major role. This course is more like a track then true cross country, and Murphy can beat Martinez on the track. It will be close, but I pick Murphy.

Nice observations everyone, but my pick will still be Murphy. Martinez might have held his ground against Signore at the Iolani Invite, but wasn't that a short course? If it was the right distance, would Signore have beaten Martinez by more than a minute? 300m is a long way, especially towards the finish line. Murphy's finish at Mt. Sac is to be respected if you compare it to his slightly flat course run in Kauai. He's a strong runner who seems to be peaking at the right moment and without anyone really pushing him in his meets in Kauai. You have to be mentelly tough to run those times all by yourself. Martinez usually has someone to run with in the first half of his races. Just watch how the two finish their races on the track (of course, that's a different surface) but Murphy is a lot stronger than Martinez. If Martinez breaks it open partway through and holds of the charge from several runners from the state, then he should win it. If he has company on that final loop on Kauai, then I would give it to Murphy.

For your debate about Martinez vs. Murphy--Martinez ran the Mt. SAC course last year at the Foot Locker West Regional. Someone can probably find his time, but I remember he was in the top 5 or 10. Seems like I could find every result back to 1996 for the West Region race but, in a quick search just now, I couldn't find his time/place from last year. He ran in the freshmen/sophomore race, I believe it was called the "regional" one. If you can find it, that will tell you what he ran at the same course one year ago, which may add to your discussion. The weather was nice and, so far as I remember, the course was fast that day...warm for the mainland kids but the Hawaii kids loved it.

To the folks who think Murphy has an edge, I respectfully disagree. Whether or not the course is flat, cross country is just a lot different than track and I think this is important to keep in mind. We frequently see top notch distance guys in high school who dominate in cross country but seem a bit weak in the 3000 or 3200 on the track. This is especially true of younger guys (look at Bryce Jenkins' sophomore year, for instance) who need to hone their mental focus or who just get lulled to sleep by the repetitiveness of 7.5 laps. In this way, perhaps Murphy is more mentally mature (hence his accomplishments in the 3000 on the track), but I don't think he is any more mentally tough or more talented than Martinez. Martinez has the edge because he has faced competition good enough to beat him this season (in Hawaii), he has raced in big local races, and he has trained with decently talented peers. He is also fiercest at the end of the season and I think that this will be enough to edge out Murphy. The home course advantage and flat route (which I hate...we've got the tallest mountains in the Pacific, and Kauai is basically just one big mountain, and they chose that piece of land for the state champs?....I just hope it's a little better than the community college "course" from before--that was nothing more than a flat field with a bunch of unruly turns and a few drainage ditches) matter, but I still don't think Martinez is going to lose.

nobody2 - It's no use comparing the Mt SAC Invite results to last years Footlocker West race. It appears as though the same course was not run both times. I don't know whether different loops were used, or what the deal was, but it couldn't have been the same course as Footlocker. Chris Schwartz won the Seeded race in 15:38 at Footlocker and the fastest time in Pierce's race was 14:35. Twenty people in that race ALONE went sub 15:38 so I'm pretty sure it was a different arrangement of the course. However, Margarito looked very strong last year at the Frosh/Soph All-West race as he came in 4th place. Just for fun, here were the top 5 times from Footlocker last year.
1 Bryce Jenkins 12 Mililani HI 16:33
2 Margarito Martinez 10 Wahiawa HI 17:06
3 Christian Putegnat 12 Ewa Beach HI 17:26
4 Matthew Nakamoto 12 Honolulu HI 17:31
5 Christopher Mosch 10 Honoka'a HI 18:08

Murphy placed 280 out of 6730 runners at Mt. SAC. That's in the top 4%. Most of the people at the state race will be cheering for him. That makes a difference. I'm sure he knows Martinez ran a 16:15 last weekend on a course much less hilly then Mt. SAC. The mind is a powerful thing. The last 600m will be very interesting. Martinez is two years older then Murphy, and has more experience, but Murphy is running on his home island and home course. Murphy will win.
