All Time Hawaii High School Baseball Team
I was going through my baseball cards that I haven't touched in a while and I found a few Hawaii guys.
Benny Agbayani-St. Louis
Jerome Williams-Waipahu
Shane Victornio-St. Anthony
The best card I found my 1989 Donruss Sid Fernandez with the New York Mets. I actually have alot of doubles of Sid. I bought alot of packs because back then I wanted a Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card.

only got to see benny play in high school. in fball, he was a very physical receiver and lined up on the other side of micah matsuzaki. in baseball, just remember that he had really good range in the outfield.SRJC wrote:I was going through my baseball cards that I haven't touched in a while and I found a few Hawaii guys.

Man, how could I forget about Benny. Game winning home run during the playoffs for The New York Mets. Don't get much better than that (except maybe Sid Fernandez striking out the side in the All-Star game).
Mike Fetters (Iolani, 83) went on to play a number of years in the bigs. What I remember most about Fetters was his fastball and his HIGH leg kick (up above his head in high school).

For some reason, I only recall Benny's exploits on the football field when he was a Crusader. But hey, he focused on baseball after high school, played in the bigs, and makes a handsome living playing the game in Japan now.
Mark Olmos was a terrific pitcher (Radford?). We can't forget Joey DeSa. He has a field named after him.
I think if we go through UH baseball alums, we'll find a bunch of guys who should be mentioned in this thread. How about Joel Lono (Kam?), Paul Brown, Collin Tanabe, Kahai Shishido (Baldwin), Mario Monico (Farrington) , Bill Blanchette (Punahou), Scott Craven (Punahou), I think Dean Hashimoto (Punahou) hit around .500 his senior year, Scooter Martines (Punahou), Ross Hayashi (Kalani).
Go through UH Hilo and there's Tyler Yates (Waimea?)

My aunt that has already passed on used to tell me about the Kashiwaeda boys and how good they were in baseball, three boys Dick, Goro and can’t remember the third boy from Makaweli/ Pakala Kauai plantation. The 3 played ball for Waimea high schoolremembered him because he was my coach in Colt league. I didn't know he was from Kauai.

Yeah, as goofy as he acts, Tiny was a good player. I played against him in a little league championship game where he laid down a squeeze bunt which brought in Kalaika17 (another poster on this and the RSN Boards) with the winning run.BigWave96744 wrote:Wasn't there a bunch of "Tanabe" Boys that played on an AJA team?
Also, though he may not be on any "All Star" listings, Tiny Tadani was actually a pretty good player for Castle...
How about Kekoa Kaluhiokalani (P) of Waianae and Lewis-Clark State?
I think Fred Kuhaulua (P) pitched for the Hawaii Islanders. He must have had decent stuff in high school if he made it to AAA ball.
How was Chris Truby (Damien?) in high school? He did a stint in the bigs.

which division of little league was this?
I know Tiny played on a Kaneohe Senior Little League All-Star team that played in the World Series in Indiana (I think it was there)
A little Colt Baseball trivia info for UHwarriorI remembered him because he was my coach in Colt league. I didn't know he was from Kauai.
Colt World Series Hawaii Entrants
Aiea (1970-73)
Hilo (1978, 1981*, 1989*)
Honolulu (PAL) (1968-69, 1977, 1979*, 1980, 1983*, 1985)
Kahului(Maui Colts) (1991-92)
Kauai (1974, 1997, 1998r)
Hawaii teams took it in 1981, 1989, 1979, 1983 and runnerup 1998
El Sid played for Honolulu PAL 1979 had 3 wins in the series.
Jeffery Vierra played for Honolulu PAL 1983 had 3 wins in the series.
El Sid had 18 strikeouts in one of the games.
I'm curious to know who played on that Hilo team.
Sid was probably the dominant pitcher of his era, just like Tats was in his era. 10+ strikeouts seemed to be the norm. They were so dominating that I only remember when they lost.Gatorade wrote:A little Colt Baseball trivia info for UHwarriorI remembered him because he was my coach in Colt league. For example, one loss (I don't know if there were any more!) was in 1980. He lost a regular season pitching duel against Wayne Takamori and Castle, 2-1 (I think) at Aloha Stadium. It was a big deal then. Sid later beat Wayne and Castle in the State tournament semifinals, I believe. As a result, Sid was not available to pitch in the State championship game against Kamehameha, which beat Kaiser's no.2 pitcher (I think his name was Lawrence Fukuoka). An even more trivial tidbit from 1980 was that Castle played BIIF champ Hilo in the first round, and faced and beat Hilo ace Reed Sunahara (yes, the All State Basketball player, Volleyball All American at UCLA and current Cincinnati Women's VB coach). Sunahara's was unbeaten with an E.R.A. of 0.00 going into the State tournament, if I recall correctly. I think Guy Ogawa was on the mound for Castle.
As for Tats, I recall that McKinley beat him and Aiea in an OIA title game, and Aiea later went on to win the State title that same year. It may have been in 1975, and I think the McKinley pitcher was named Asato.
