Cowboy Joe
Cowboy Joe IV, a fourth generation Wyoming mascot, trots around War Memorial Stadium after each Cowboy touchdown, a tradition which started in 1950 when the Farthing Family of Cheyenne made a generous donation of a young pony to become Wyoming's mascot. This beautiful little pony is very popular with Cowboy fans of all ages.

Pistol Pete is Back!
Redesigned University of Wyoming mascot introduced at Fall Sports Media Day.

Aug. 10, 2002

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming Athletics Department introduced today the redesigned mascot long known to Cowboy fans as Pistol Pete. The fan-friendly character's career was launched at the annual Fall Sports Media Day luncheon held in the Rochelle Athletics Center.

Pistol Pete, really a UW student, will assist the Wyoming cheerleaders, encourage the crowd and get the young fans involved in the game.

The mascot's appearance was designed over the past year by Street Characters from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with the input and supervision of UW's Athletics Marketing Department.

Brown-Eyed Susan

Brown and Gold
The story behind the colors of the University of Wyoming dates back to 1895. In the Spring of that year, the first ever UW Alumni Banquet was held. Decorations for the banquet included Brown-Eyed Susans, a flower native of Southeastern Wyoming. The Alumni were so impressed with the colors (brown and yellow) and the beauty of the flowers that they decided to select these colors as the official school colors at UW. In recent years the colors have been modified to brown and gold.

Cowboys
The nickname "Cowboys" was applied to Wyoming athletic teams as early as 1891 - two years before the first official football game. The story is that the Wyoming pick-up football team appealed to a 220 pound cowpuncher, Fred Bush, for help in a game against the Cheyenne Soldiers. Bush signed up for a course or two and came out for the team. When he trotted onto the field decked out in a checkered shirt and Cowboy hat, someone yelled, "Hey, look at the Cowboy!" Since many of the members of the team were also ex-cowboys, the name stuck.

Ragtime Cowboy Joe

The familiar fight song of the Wyoming Cowboys is Ragtime Cowboy Joe, which is performed by the band as the football teams enter the field and following each score. The Cowboy players traditionally sing this following each Wyoming victory.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOE
"He always sings
Raggy music to the cattle
as he swings
back and forward in the saddle,
on a horse - a pretty good horse!
He's got a syncopated gaiter,
and you ought to hear the meter
to the roar of his repeater;
how they run - yes run! -
when they hear him 'a-comin',
cause the western folks all know,
he's a high-falootin', rootin, tootin',
son of a gun from ol' Wyoming,
Ragtime Cowboy
Talk about your Cowboy,
Ragtime Cowboy Joe.

Pepsi's Cowboy Tailgate

Tailgating prior to Wyoming football games has become as much of a Saturday afternoon tradition as the game itself. Passionate Poke fans arrive hours before kickoff dressed in their Cowboy apparel to eat a burger, drink a Pepsi, listen to the band and experience college football’s game day excitement.

As of fall 2003, the Wyoming Athletics Department and Pepsi are teaming up to enhance this experience by creating Pepsi’s Cowboy Tailgate. As the name sponsor, each year Pepsi will devote funds to the University to purchase an interactive inflatable attraction or some other appropriate activity. This year’s attraction is a 15’ x 12’ x 12’ inflatable item called “Quarterback Challenge.”

With these new items (and activities), Saturday afternoons in Laramie will be even more enjoyable for Cowboy fans.

Attractions to be offered this year include:
• Cowboy Joe Club hospitalities
• Quarterback Challenge: How accurate are your passing skills?
• Face painting and temporary tattoos
• Team Shop: Purchase your favorite UW team gear
• University of Wyoming Western Thunder Marching Band
• Pistol Pete and the University of Wyoming Cheerleading squad
• Wyoming Athletics trivia contest and prizes
• Food & Drink vendors
• Live music

Pepsi's Cowboy Tailgate is located on the grassy hill just north of War Memorial Stadium.

Had a little trouble learning the words this year, did they? (As you might have gathered from our red zone offense, our players never picked up on a tradition like this one...)

The Bronze Boot

The Bronze Boot

Wyoming players celebrate with the Bronze Boot trophy after beating CSU 24-0 in Laramie, Oct. 21, 2006.

The annual Wyoming-Colorado State football game has evolved into one of the most bitterly contested rivalries in college football. The teams have waged the "Border War" ninety-seven times since the schools began playing in 1899, playing every year except 1901, 1902, 1906, 1907, 1918, 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1943, 1944, and 1945. In fact, this is one of the oldest interstate rivalries west of the Mississippi River. The series is the oldest rivalry for both schools and the "Border War" has been played in three different centuries.

In 1968, the ROTC detachments of the respective schools initiated the Bronze Boot, a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the contest each year. The Boot was originally worn in Vietnam by Colorado State graduate Jeff Romero Sr. in Vietnam.

Each year leading up to the Wyoming-Colorado State game, the game ball is carried on foot in a shuttle relay by the ROTC detachment of the visiting team to the Wyoming-Colorado state border, where the home team's ROTC detachment receives it and runs the game ball to the stadium hosting the game.

The boot has rested in the UW Athletics Dept. in 20 of the 39 years since its inception. The Bronze Boot has become one of the most famous traveling trophies in college football. Following is a list of the Boot Series scores:

Cronk Donates $1,000,000 to UW Athletics Facilities Campaign
Gift will be matched by the state of Wyoming, totaling two million dollars.

Nov. 14, 2006

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

A $1 million gift to the University of Wyoming Athletics Facilities Campaign by the David S. Cronk family has been announced by UW Athletics Director Tom Burman.

The Cronk Family commitment will be matched by the State of Wyoming, making it a $2,000,000 gift, according to Burman. He said that approximately $3.2 million remains in state matching funds, and brings the private giving total to approximately $12.8 million.

Cronk was a quarterback on the Cowboy football team, and earned two letters in 1960 and 1961 under Head Coach Bob Devaney. He is a native of Alpena, Mich., and currently resides in Englewood, Colo.

"I am very proud of the University of Wyoming, and have many fond memories of my time there," Cronk said. "I have made this gift in honor of the coaches who have been such an important part of my life, Bob Devaney, my head coach, as well as coaches Jim Ross, Lloyd Eaton and Paul Roach."

"We are deeply appreciative of this gift from Dave and his family," said Paul Roach, chairman of the Athletics Strategic Fund campaign. "Dave is extremely proud of his alma mater, and its athletic program. This gift is a reflection of his passion for the Cowboys and the Cowgirls."

According to Burman, the gift will be designated for the new indoor practice facility as well as for renovations to War Memorial Stadium.

"Dave's million-dollar commitment put us within reach of our goal, and allows us to move forward on these two existing projects," Burman said. "It is amazing how much Dave and his family have meant to this university and its athletics program."

UW's Athletic Strategic Plan addresses many facility needs, and was initiated to lay ground work for Wyoming's future success. Upgrades to the upper concourse of War Memorial Stadium, Jonah Field and the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex are projects already completed thanks to the Strategic Plan. Additional upgrades to the lower concourses of the stadium, as well as the indoor practice facility and the indoor tennis complex are three more projects addressed by the Plan. Construction is underway for the indoor practice facility which will ultimately benefit all 17 sports. It will be an impressive addition to the Wyoming athletic plant.
