Morris Updates Recruiting After 8 Commits in a Week

Post by HawaiianHogster »

While Chad Morris can't comment on specific recruits, he did talk about what is contributing to the overall success the Razorbacks are having at this time.

Arkansas has 15 commitments and will add to that total this week. On Monday at the Paradise Valley Athletic Club, Morris and his staff were there to meet with the media in addition to a golfing event.

Morris was asked what his staff is doing that seems to be leading to a lot of recruiting success?

"It's all about getting them on campus," Morris said. "That's it. When you get them on campus, we've got a great product to sell. My goodness, from all the things there are happening on campus right now. The updates, the renovations, the town, It's absolutely gorgeous, so we've got a lot to sell.

"We've got to continue to build and put a product on the field that'll add to that, and we will. But our staff is doing a fabulous job. I'm really proud of these guys. Everybody's hitting the ground running with that. They understand if we can just get them on campus, we've got a chance. And be who we are and show what we're about. And why the University of Arkansas fits them."

Morris also added that getting them on campus allows the staff to do even more evaluating that simply can't be done off just watching film.

"And getting guys on campus, sometimes you realize, 'OK, that was great. I'm glad I got him on campus, but he doesn't fit what we're about. So let's just move in another direction,'" Morris said.

The Razorbacks had several Prospect Days following National Signing Day. Then spring practices allowed them to have visitors on campus. The Hogs hosted summer football camps and then the Woo Pignic this past Friday. They also have hosted official visitors to campus during the spring and summer.

"That's all about the functions that we have," Morris said. "I've just been very pleased with the direction where we're at."

At this time, the Hogs have one quarterback, three wide receivers, two offensive linemen, six defensive linemen, two linebackers, a cornerback and a safety committed. Morris talked about certain needs in a class.

"I know there's areas we have to build on," Morris said. "I've talked a little bit about how I feel like you have to build a football team and sustain success. And it's in that offensive and defensive line first and foremost. And then speed."

SEC Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2018

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Not sure how to take this but for Arkansas they don't see anything competitive coming from them for a couple years at least. For some reason they feel sorry for Chad Morris. I say Chad Morris is in an excellent position to win a few unexpected games and surprise a few teams. Now if Chad replaced a winning coach and winning program then I would feel sorry for him.

There's only one way the Hogs can go. That is up, forward, progressively improving each and every game. Remember the Hogs went 1-7 in the SEC last year. They could do the same this year or even worse but that is only by one game. Being it is his first year and Chad came from SMU I don't see any pressure for him to start winning the SEC in his first 4 years as long as he can win and get them to some respected bowl games between his second and fourth year.

The key thing that will keep Chad our head coach will be if his team improves every year unlike Bret's team that got worse in the win column as the years went on.

Top 10 Questions Heading into The Hogs' Football Season-No. 2: The O Line.

Top 10 Questions Heading into The Hogs' Football Season-No. 2: The O Line.

Probably no position on the field offers a bigger question mark heading into the season than the Razorbacks' offensive line. The problems there over the last two seasons are well documented. Losing Colton Jackson at left tackle for at least the first two games of the coming season is not what this offense needs right now. There was already an urgent directive to develop depth in the O-line because of the extra snaps taken in Chad Morris' hurry up offense and now Morris has to replace a starter before a game has been played.

If there is a bright spot in that situation, the head coach already had a plan in place to deal with the physical stress those linemen would face in his quick snap offense. An offense that typically results in a significant increase in the number of offensive snaps in a game cries out for depth at each position. Morris' solution to develop better depth will also help in reacting to injuries.

"Our job is to find the best five (in the O-line) and make them fit," Morris said of the challenge he faces offensively up front. "Then, through fall camp, we've got to find the next five behind them. Try come out up with quality two-deep. To do that we've got to have moving parts. There were moving parts that had to happen before Colton got injured, with us anticipating Colton being at that left tackle position. But now that he's out we really have to make sure that we cross train."

Top 10 Questions Heading into The Hogs' Football Season-No. 1: The Quarterbacks

Top 10 Questions Heading into The Hogs' Football Season-No. 1: The Quarterbacks

Arkansas doesn't have an Allen at quarterback this season. Both Brandon and Austin have graduated so now the Razorbacks will have a different quarterback.

Austin was hampered by injuries in 2017 thus opening the door for redshirt freshman Cole Kelley to get some experience. Allen was injured in the South Carolina game on Oct. 7 and didn't return until the LSU contest on Nov. 11.

While the injuries mounted for Arkansas last season not only at quarterback, but throughout the squad, it did allow Kelley and others to get some experience. Kelley played in nine games with four starts. He completed 87 of 151 passes for 1,038 yards and 8 touchdowns with four interceptions. The Razorbacks went 2-2 in Kelley's four starts defeating Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss.

Chad Morris has five candidates for the quarterback job. Of the five, junior Ty Storey didn't attempt a pass in 2017 while Daulton Hyatt redshirted as a true freshman. Connor Noland and John Stephen Jones were leading their high school teams to state championships.

Expectations low for Arkansas entering Morris' first season

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://www.nwahomepage.com/pig-trail-n ... 1342581795
AP Sports Writer - FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Everywhere Chad Morris goes around Arkansas these days, he's excited.

The first-year Razorbacks coach has been preaching his excitement since being hired away from SMU last December, doing so at fan clubs, to the media, on social media - and to anyone else who will listen.

He's excited about a talented recruiting class that's taking shape and the weight-room progress Arkansas' players have made since the end of spring practice.

Most of all, he's eager to start his first preseason camp in Arkansas on Friday.

"We're a better football team right now that we were at any point in time since I've gotten here," Morris said.

How good that is, especially compared to the usual gauntlet that is the Southeastern Conference, remains to be seen.

Expectations from the outside looking in this season are low for the Razorbacks, who were picked to finish last in the SEC West by the media last month.

Morris, however, is confident Arkansas is ready to begin the process of re-establishing itself after a 4-8 record a year ago, including 1-7 in the SEC. Overall, the Razorbacks have gone 33-42 in the six seasons since the firing of scandal-ridden Bobby Petrino in 2012, the school's worst stretch since 1948-53.

While Morris will be rightly focused this month on putting together a full depth chart in his first preseason after replacing the fired Bret Bielema, two big-picture issues will be what most observers are focused on with the Razorbacks.

Frist, how will Arkansas adjust from Bielema's slower, more-traditional approach compared to the frenetic pace of Morris' up-tempo offense?

Secondly, who's the quarterback ?

"I know that's kind of the main one that everybody wants to hear about and talk about," Morris said.

Morris and offensive coordinator Joe Craddock don't have an answer for who will start the season under center when the Razorbacks open the season against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 1. At least, not one they are making public quite yet.

Returners Cole Kelley and Ty Storey figure to have the best shot at winning the job, but Morris isn't ruling out the possibility of a newcomer earning the position. Kelley has the experience edge over any other challenger, having started four games last season as a freshman in place of an injured Austin Allen.

Still, the 6-foot-7, 258-pound Kelley has had to regain the trust of his coaches and teammates after being arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated late last season.

Storey, meanwhile, has seen only limited action over his two seasons and was behind Kelley on the depth chart last season under Bielema.

Whomever wins the job will need to meet one key requirement to satisfy Craddock over the next few weeks.

"Consistency," Craddock said. "... Do you make those other 10 guys around you better? That's what we're really looking for, we're looking for a leader, looking for a guy who's really got pop and to take the reins and show everybody else what it looks like."

ESPN's Football Power Index's projections for Arkansas

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Fayetteville, AR. -- ESPN's Power Football Index (PFI) projects the percentages for a school's chances of winning each game this fall.

According to the PFI, Arkansas has favorable percentages to win six of its 12 games in the regular season. ESPN projects Arkansas to be at 6-3 when the final three games of the season roll around.

A school needs to win six games to be eligible for a bowl game. The Razorbacks missed a bowl last season after appearing in one the previous three seasons.

Arkansas opens the season at home on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Eastern Illinois. The PFI gives Arkansas a 98.3 percent chance of winning the game. It should be the easiest game on Arkansas' schedule.

The following week the Hogs head to Fort Collins to face Colorado State. The Rams actually have two games prior to the Arkansas game. They open on Aug. 25 at Hawaii. On Friday, Aug. 31, Colorado State faces Colorado in Denver. Colorado State was 7-6 in 2017 under Mike Bobo. In three years in Fort Collins, Bobo is 21-18. Bobo welcomes back nine starters from last year's squad. The PFI places Arkansas' percentage of winning this game at 80.4.

Morris on QB Competition: 'No Timeline to Name Starter'

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig- ... 1346827186

Fayetteville, AR-

Cole Kelley, Ty Storey, Connor Noland...who knows at this point. That's the buzz around fall camp regarding the quarterback battle. Chad Morris makes it very clear where the Hogs stand as they search for their starter.

"What's the timeline on the starting quarterback? There's really not one. I know everybody wants to say, when are we going to make this when are we going to make this call? That I don't know. I know we're going to get through the scrimmages and we're going to see who moves the team down the field and gets them in the endzone. We want the same guy every day. I don't want a guy who's up here one day and down here the next. I want the same guy. Up ten or down ten, I want to see the same guy that's going to keep everything under control and will his team to winning," the First-Year Head Hog said.

Morris also points out that Daulton Hyatt has impressed. "Nobody's really talking about him," Morris adds. The man in charge of the Razorback Program has challenged Hyatt in fall camp simply asking him how he will respond.

Hogs Have Depth at Linebacker and Chavis Plans to Use It

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Most Razorback fans are aware that Dre Greenlaw and Scoota Harris are being billed as maybe the best linebacker duo in the SEC. But the two Arkansas veterans are quick to point out that any success the linebackers have this season will go beyond them. A quick snap offense means more total plays for the defense which will require depth.

"Coach (John) Chavis has told us that he's hoping to play six or seven linebackers this season," sophomore Hayden Henry revealed at Razorback Media Day on Saturday. "He wants all of us to be fresh. I mean Scoota and Dre can't play an entire game. There's just no way. Against some teams we're looking at 70 snaps. That takes a toll on your body."

"One thing I felt like we never had (last season) was depth," Harris acknowledged. "We've got depth now. You got Grant (Morgan) and Giovanni (LaFrance) behind me. You got Dee Walker and Alexy Jean-Baptiste at Will (linebacker) and you got Hayden at the starting Sam (linebacker) and you got D’Vone (McClure) and Deon Edwards there too. All of those guys get a lot of reps at practice."

Chase Hayden Primed for His Return

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Sophomore running back Chase Hayden is healthy this fall and ready to continue the success he was having as a true freshman before his injury.

“It's really good,” Hayden said. “Just makes you more grateful for the game of football. It's great to be back out there really playing again.”

Hayden was injured late in the first half of the Auburn game and missed the remainder of the season. Despite playing only seven games, he finished third on the team in rushing with 61 carries for 326 yards and four touchdowns. His longest run of the season was a 40-yard sprint.

My Outlook so Far

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Do you see it? Do you hear what I hear? All the positive attitudes towards themselves, their teammates, and their coaches. I have never seen our football team be so together, so excited, looking forward to showing off their stuff and proving the nay say'rs wrong. All I'm hearing from the Hogs are we feel we can be the best in the country at our position. I'm hearing that from the offensive line, the running backs, the receiving core, the LB's, Corners, the TE's, and others.

This coaching staff has lit a fire under their players to get them to feel good about themselves, to be strong physically and mentally. I feel it in the air. I can see we are going to witness a much better team than the past two years. Like Coach Morris said they will need to learn how to handle adversity. That is so true. That is how you finish games. That was one thing they lacked the past two years with last year being the worst.

I'm stoked right now about what I am seeing from Coach Morris. He is rubbing off on everyone around him. He is rubbing off on the Hog fans as well. Lots of positive posts on the Hogville.net forum.

My two favorite teams are changing their offense and doing things better than before. Hawaii gives me hope with a new QB in the Run & Shoot. I too am excited for Hawaii and will attend every home game cheering for them like always. This season I believe will be very special for me since my favorite teams are going to improve in the win column. That's right Hawaii will win more games than last year. My gut feeling is they will play in their bowl game this Christmas and if things go better than expected we may see them in the MWC Championship game. GAME ON!

Wallace Ready to Help Anchor the Offensive Line

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Fayetteville, AR. – Senior Brian Wallace is set to begin his fifth season at Arkansas and unlike recent years it seems he's the established starter at right offensive tackle.

It has seemed like the past couple of years it was almost like someone was trying to find anyone but Wallace to play right tackle. He turned down Alabama, Missouri, Iowa and many others to come to Arkansas. So how are things different for you this year compared to last season?

“Working out and practicing every day differently,” Wallace said. “They get everything out of you. You have to give it your best all the time.”

How are you differently physically from a year ago?

“I feel like I'm in better shape from all the conditioning we've been doing,” Wallace said. “I've definitely dropped some pounds. That's one thing you have to do as far as playing in this offense.”

Arkansas coach Chad Morris talked about the difference he sees in the offensive line and particularly Wallace.
