SEC Media Days with Chad Morris

Post by HawaiianHogster »

I found out a lot more about our head coach and some of the players that never knew before. I believe they are headed in the right direction. At least they are putting themselves up there in that their goal is to be SEC champions as well as NCAA National Champions. I like their attitude, demeanor, confidence, and how humble and loving they are for one another. I believe they have the first part of being champions completed. That is being one big Family, Strong, Skilled, Athletic, Talented, Hungry, and have bought into the Chad Morris concept of being Champions. The other part they are lacking that will complete their journey to the national Championship Game are the wins and losses.

Fall camp is around the corner. Posts like this keep me excited.

Whaley & Hayden Listed Among the Top Running Backs in the Country

Arkansas running backs Devwah Whaley and Chase Hayden are among 62 running backs on this year’s preseason list, making the Razorbacks one of just three programs with a pair of players featured on the list.

Whaley, a junior, started 11 of 12 games played last season. He finished as the team’s second leading rusher with 559 yards and seven touchdowns on 127 carries and caught eight passes for 56 yards and a score. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Whaley scored a touchdown rushing or receiving in each of the last six regular season games.

Hayden will enter his sophomore season after rushing for 326 yards and four touchdowns on 61 attempts in seven games played in 2017. He became one of only three Arkansas true freshmen to rush for 100 yards or more in his Razorback debut when he tallied a game-high 120 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries in last year’s season opener.

Top 10 Questions Heading Into the Hog Football Season: No. 10

Number 10: Chad Morris' first staff at Arkansas.

If experience matters with players it also counts with coaches. Arkansas' defensive staff brings 94 years experience into this season, 47 of that in the SEC. Compare that to Chad Morris' offensive assistants who have a mere 24 years of combined experience as full time assistant coaches on the college level, five years of that in the SEC.

There's nobody on the offensive side like John Chavis. With over 30 years experience as an assistant coach, Chavis has spent 23 years in the SEC. He coached on a national championship team at Tennessee and with a national runner up at LSU.

Defensive line coach Steve Caldwell was with Chavis at Tennessee and he was the defensive line coach at Arkansas when the Hogs won 21 games in two years under Bobby Petrino.

Secondary coach Ron Cooper has worked at four different SEC schools and also in the NFL.

Contrast that with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joe Craddock who has just three years experience as a full time assistant coach, all at SMU. The same is true offensive line coach Dustin Fry. Running backs coach Jeff Traylor also has just three years experience as a college assistant.

Tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. is the only offensive assistant with SEC experience. He's worked nine years as a college assistant coach, five of those years in the SEC.

Chad Morris made his offense work at SMU but he and his offensive assistants are about to step onto the biggest stage in college football and with the exception of Lunney, they have not faced the kind of overall talent they'll coach against this fall.

When it comes to the SEC those coaches will be learning on the fly which is a big reason why Morris went heavy on experience when hiring a defensive staff.

Top 10 Questions Heading Into the Hogs' Football Season-No. 9: The Tight Ends

It could be argued that Bret Bielema's tenure at Arkansas hit a high water mark in the 2016 Liberty Bowl. Tight ends Hunter Henry and Jeremy Sprinkle combined for 173 receiving yards in the Hogs' 45-23 win over Kansas State. When things went right for the offense under Bielema the tights ends were usually a part of it.

One of the first things I remember being asked after Chad Morris was hired, "Is Arkansas still going to be known as "Tight Ends U?" Morris quickly answered that question saying that in his offensive system the tight ends are number two in importance behind the quarterback.

He backed that up in the spring game where both touchdowns passes thrown were to tight end Cheyenne O'Grady. One from Ty Storey and one from Cole Kelley. After a rocky start at Arkansas O'Grady began turning his career around last season. Morris getting hired to replace Bielema could not have worked out any better for O'Grady and teammate Jeremy Patton who became a starter midway through last season in his first year out of junior college. Their roles will not be diminished under the new staff. If anything they will become an even more important part of the offense.

Patton is hoping to take his game to another level this season in Morris' power spread. Those two, along with Austin Cantrell and Grayson Gunter, should be in interesting to watch this fall. Morris says he will use his tight ends as receivers, blockers, decoys and maybe, on occasion, shifting into the backfield as fullbacks or running backs.

Morris has made it clear that there will be a learning curve for the tight ends in his offense. They are doing so many different things that they'll have to be locked in with a total understanding of their roles in his system. The good news is, the most experienced position coach on the offensive side of the ball is tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. who was retained from Bielema's staff. He knows his players and they know him. That will be a plus in this transition period.

Nothing is ever certain in college football but when this first season under Morris is done the tight ends will likely turn out to be one of the bright spots. Certainly O'Grady, Patton, Cantrell and Gunter need to stay healthy. Morris is expecting a lot out of them.

Top 10 Questions Coming Into the Razorback Football Season- No. 8: Running Backs

Top 10 Questions Coming Into the Razorback Football Season- No. 8: Running Backs

In his five seasons at Arkansas Bret Bielema continued to push the concept of a run first offense. It didn't usually work out that way but there is no question that he placed a premium on the running game. That won't go away under new head coach Chad Morris. In fact the number of running backs involved in the offense will increase due to the two-back sets that Morris employs.

SMU put up more rushing numbers last season with more touchdowns on the ground and a better run-pass balance than Arkansas had under Bielema. With that in mind does Morris have the kind of talent and depth he'll need in the backfield to make his power spread offense work on the Hill?

The Hogs' top 2017 rusher is gone. David Williams piled up 656 yards rushing with 8 touchdowns. But Devwah Whaley, Chase Hayden and T.J. Hammonds return and they combined for 1,147 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

The trio will be joined by Maleek Williams, a four star running back out of Florida, who redshirted a year ago. Williams has a good combination of speed and power and was impressive the Razorback spring game.

Arriving on campus next week is Junior College transfer Rakeem Boyd. Razorback fans have been keeping up with Boyd's exploits at Independence Kansas Community College on the Netflix series "Last Chance U." After spending a year at Texas A&M Boyd piled up over 12 hundred yards rushing with 14 touchdowns at the school before signing with Arkansas.

Morris says, in his system, there will be enough footballs to go around for all of his running backs. But the past two seasons under Bielema the running game suffered from poor offensive line play.

Morris says the wider splits taken by offensive linemen in his offense will open up better running lanes. Indeed there was evidence of that this past spring both in practices and in the Red-White game. Morris also arrived in Fayetteville with a directive for the offensive line. Lose weight.

In his offense, agility and quickness trumps brute force.

As the team prepares to begin pre season practices next week it looks like they listened. Several veteran linemen will reportedly show up significantly trimmer than they were when Morris was hired.

Top 10 Questions Entering the Razorback Football Season-No. 7: Linebackers

Those close to Arkansas defensive coordinator John Chavis say there was a reason why he jumped at the chance to go to Arkansas after the coaching change at Texas A&M. Chavis coaches linebackers and he inherits two of the best in the SEC in Dre Greenlaw and Scoota Harris. The two combined for 193 tackles last season.

Harris lead the team in stops. Greenlaw was right behind him. With Kevin Richardson getting a sixth year of eligibility you can add his 42 tackles into the mix at the hybrid linebacker/nickel back position. Backup linebacker Grant Morgan recorded 30 tackles last season. So Chavis will be coaching a group of guys who had 265 tackles in 2017. Each of them is an excellent pass rusher and they are good in pass coverage too.

Chavis is taking the defense back to the 4-3 scheme it employed until last season when Bret Bielema switched to a 3-4 with the promise of better blitzing. The anticipated pressure rarely happened and Arkansas' defense was mostly a reactive unit, meaning opposing quarterbacks often had as much time as they needed to spot and connect with open receivers. Chavis is promising to end that frustration. He is confident enough in these guy's ability to pressure quarterbacks that the secondary will apparently be playing a lot of man coverage this season.

Morris has said that Greenlaw and Harris made a quick transition back to the 4-3 because of their familiarity with it from the 2016 season. But offensive guard Hjalte Froholdt, who has gone up against Greenlaw and Harris in practice for the past two years, says those guys can play in any scheme. They're tough to catch up to, hard to block and they have a nose for the football according to Froholdt.

If you've been frustrated by an Arkansas defense that had a bend but don't break philosophy, but all too often would both bend and break, Chavis promises to attack with players like Greenlaw, Harris and K-Rich.

How well will it work? We'll all find out soon enough.

Top 10 Questions Coming Into the Razorback Football Season- No. 6: Secondary

The secondary is actually a bright spot for the Arkansas Razorbacks next season.

Last year, the defense overall really struggled last year. But, with the return of veteran, talented players, the secondary gives fans something to look forward to.

However, they are adjusting to two new positions coaches in Mark Smith and Ron Cooper. Not to mention, an entirely different defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator John Chavis.

It seems the players really like "The Chief", and are excited to put pressure on the quarterback.

The secondary will be playing a lot of man coverage in 2018. Which shouldn't be a problem for corner Ryan Pulley. The senior returns this year after missing half the season with a pectoral injury in 2017. But before that, Pulley was a stud for the secondary and is looking to make a statement this year.

Kamren Curl stepped up in his absence and really held his own as a freshman. But now, he's switching to the safety position. He joins Santos Ramirez who recently said Curl is a natural fit at safety. If he needs any help though, Ramirez would be a good person to lean on.

Ramirez was a team captain last season and a real threat on the field. He had 63 tackles, 8 pass break ups and forced three fumbles.

Kevin Richardson will also be a key player for the Hogs in 2018, just like he was in '17. The best part about Krich is you can put him anywhere on the field and he will produce. He's Arkansas' best returning nickel from last year but he also played corner and safety. His versatility mixed with his experience makes him a real problem for opposing offenses.

Overall, the outlook on the Arkansas secondary is good. Only time will tell if they can live up to expectations.

Top Ten Questions Heading Into Fall Camp: No. 5- Wide Receivers

Top Ten Questions Heading Into Fall Camp: No. 5- Wide Receivers
Posted: Jul 28, 2018 07:18 PM CDT

Updated: Jul 28, 2018 07:18 PM CDT

Wide Receivers coach Justin Stepp has a lot of options this season at Wide Receiver.

The Hogs return their leading receiver in Jonathan Nance who had 37 catches for 539 yards and 5 touchdowns. Deon Stewart and Jordan Jones round out the top three receivers a year ago for Arkansas.

You also get back Koilan Jackson who was out of the season after tearing his ACL in fall camp, and everyone's favorite dj/carpenter/sewing expert Jared Cornelius who is back from an Achilles injury he suffered last year against Texas A&M. Keeping Cornelius healthy is critical this season.

Really the only bad news is Brandon Martin who is no longer with the team because of academics reasons.

We'd be remised if we didn't mention La'Michael Pettway, Gary Cross, Tobias Enlow, De'Vion Warren, Jarrod Barnes and newcomer Michael Woods.

So as you can see options. But here is the thing.

The key is separation, and not just from the DB's downfield. Who is going to separate themselves from the pack?

What Arkansas doesn't need is Jonathan Nance, Jared Cornelius and then everyone else.

We'll see who catches coach's eye in fall camp, because in this fast pace world of Chad Morris, you either step up or get left behind.

Otis' 5 Thoughts On Arkansas Recruiting

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Otis Kirk-

Chad Morris and his staff have hit the ground running at Arkansas as far as recruiting. No staff in recent memory has been this aggressive on the recruiting trail.

Morris said at his initial press conference recruiting would be a priority and it has been. The staff is up to 14 commitments for 2019 and more could follow soon.

Here's five thoughts about Arkansas recruiting as it stands on July 27.

https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig- ... 1331136572

Arkansas On Hot Streak In Recruiting

Arkansas is now up to 14 verbal commitments for the Class of 2019. It doesn't take but one look at the list to know that Chad Morris and his staff are hitting the defensive line extremely hard.

The Razorbacks held their Woo Pig Nic cookout on Friday night. Already three prospects have chosen to go with the Razorbacks bring the commitment total to 14.

https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig- ... 1330993902

Recruiting Guru Joins Hogville & Pig Trail Nation

Fayetteville, AR - Otis Kirk is joining Hogville and Pig Trail Nation as the new Recruiting Expert. Kirk was one of the first reporters in Arkansas to cover the recruiting beat. He is excited to bring his content to the Arkansas Fan Base for free!

To learn more about him, and his role, you can read his full statement below.

"I am thrilled and excited to announce I am at Hogville and Pig Trail Nation beginning today. This is something I am very enthused about. I won't come here with a lot of promises, but one I will give you is I will work my butt off to help make this site even better than it already is. I will give you my best each and every day.

I am happy to finally get a chance to work with and for my good friend Lanny Beavers. He and I have talked about this day for several years.

My duties here and at Pig Trail Nation will be to provide Arkansas Razorback coverage. I will obviously cover football recruiting and be at the games as well. The practice reports and game coverage will all be here and hopefully add even more to the great stuff from Mike Irwin and the others at Pig Trail Nation. I will also be very active on the Hogville message boards.

One thing to keep in mind with all my work here and anything I do at Pig Trail Nation is it will ALL be FREE. It will allow you to get premium information, in addition to what you are already getting, and not have to pay for it.

If you enjoy the stuff once I get established here, please, tell others and ask them to register at Hogville. I enjoy working and covering the Razorbacks but I don't really enjoy writing about myself. I have covered the Razorbacks for over 30 years. Now I am ready to get started and get back to covering the Razorbacks as Chad Morris gets ready to begin his first season.

I know some will be happy I am here and others may not be as thrilled. That is all fine. I am just asking you read the content and give me a chance to show you what I plan to do here.

This is a great day for me and, as I said earlier, I will give you my best every single day. And once again remember, and tell friends, it's FREE."

Defense Headlines Latest Commitments for Arkansas Football

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig- ... 1332921399

Arkansas currently has 14 commitments for the Class of 2019 and likely to add more in the coming days.

Of the commitments, nine are targeted for defense. That includes six on the line, one linebacker, a cornerback and another at safety. The Hogs reeled in five commitments this week with all defensive players.

Mansfield (Texas) Legacy defensive lineman Enoch Jackson has moved his commitment date up to Friday from Sunday, Aug. 5. Jackson is down to the Hogs, Clemson and Texas Tech. As a junior, Jackson had 52 tackles, including 19 for loss, six sacks and two fumble recoveries. Of the three finalists, the Hogs were the first to offer. Arkansas offered on Feb. 24 while Texas Tech was May 3 and then Clemson May 27.

If Jackson commits to the Hogs he would join Warren's Marcus Miller and Lufkin (Texas) standout Carl Williams as interior defensive linemen in this class.

A goal of Arkansas was to get taller at defensive end and deeper, in general, on the line. At defensive end, Joe T. Robinson's Zach Williams, Putnam City (Okla.) High's Collin Clay, Douglasville (Ga.) Douglas County's Mataio Soli and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG's Eric Gregory are committed.

It was huge for the Razorbacks to keep Williams in the state. He is among the elite players in Arkansas at any position and plays at an outstanding high school. He and Soli both had fathers who were very good players for the Razorbacks. Rickey Williams was a great linebacker at Arkansas from 1984-87. Junior Soli was a standout on the defensive line for the Hogs from 1992-95. Soli was on Arkansas' All-Decade team named for 1990-99 while Williams received the same honor from 1980-89.

Gregory (July 23) and Clay (July 26) joined the class this week while Zach Williams committed on July 5 and Soli June 9. Carl Williams pledged to Arkansas on July 3 while Miller was on Saturday.

The Razorbacks did well getting Richmond (Texas) Fort Bend Travis linebacker Zach Zimos to go public on Saturday. Zimos is a taller linebacker, 6-foot-4, who also can run well. Among the other linebackers being sought by the Hogs is Bentonville West's Kendall Young who is 6-5. Both Young and Zimos are listed at 215 pounds. Like Zimos, Young can run well. Both fit exactly what John Chavis looks for on defense.

Rison's Malik Chavis is an athlete who will likely play cornerback at Arkansas. He committed to Arkansas on March 10. He was someone who Chad Morris and his staff believed in so they offered him and he accepted soon afterward.

Pflugerville (Texas) Hendrickson safety Myles Brooks also joined the class on Saturday. Brooks, 6-2, 190, brings outstanding size to the position. Arkansas also is in the running for Mansfield Legacy safety Jalen Catalon, a teammate of Jackson. Catalon has offers from all over the country and would be a great get for Mark Smith and the Hogs. Smith recruited Legacy hard during the spring evaluation period.

Morris is known as an offensive genius, but he definitely knows the importance of a great defense.

Marty Burlsworth Talks Legends Dinner

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig- ... 1332846825

Marty Burlsworth, the Chairman/CEO and Founder, of The Burlsworth Foundation sat down in studio with Tera Talmadge to discuss the upcoming Legends Dinner.

The event takes place on August 17th at the Fayetteville Town Center where the foundation will honor Mike Anderson.

Anderson has been at the helm of the Arkansas men's basketball program for seven years now. Burlsworth says he exemplifies everything the foundation stands for.

"Coach Anderson was here with the coach Richardson back in the day when my brother Brandon was playing and so they, you know, he's got memories of all that time together," says Burlsworth. "Coach Anderson's just a great role model. Great example, and that's what we look for for our legends. People that, you know, that you can look up to. People that have done a lot in our state of Arkansas, so that's a natural fit and we're thrilled."

New Arkansas AD, Hunter Yurachek, will also be in attendance along with Scotty Thurman and Mark Waldrip.

For ticket information and more on the event, visit brandonburlsworth.org.

For several seasons now, the Arkansas kicking game has left a lot to be desired. But the new Head Hog is looking to change that.

Arkansas head coach Chad Morris knows the kicking units need to make major improvements before the 2018 season starts in just 33 days.

"We've got to see more consistency," says Morris "We did some really good things in spring but we weren't as consistent as I want us to be and it showed up. We had an awful day in the Spring Game. So we'll see, we've challenged them and we've got some competition going on right there."

I'm sure Arkansas fans all remember the name, Cole Hedlund. The former Razorback has transferred to North Texas and who can blame him. Considering the rough season he had, especially the missed field goal kick against TCU that went viral.

After that, Connor Limpert stepped in.

Limpert finished the season 8-9 and made 33 PATs. Plus, you can't forget his game winning kick over Ole Miss.

As for punting, Blake Johnson currently sits in the top spot for the Hogs. Johnson punted 59 times last season and landed just 16 kicks inside the 20-yard-line.

Bottom line, the kicking game needs work.

But who knows, maybe we'll al be pleasantly surprised this season.

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”
