Girls tackle football? Yeah, it's happening

On Saturday, 50 fifth- and sixth-graders came to an elementary school field in West Jordan, Utah, to play some football. Parents and coaches marked off a 60-yard-by-35-yard grid for them, and threw out some smaller footballs for them to throw around. It was hardly an abnormal scene, except for the fact that the players were all girls, and when the scrimmage started, they began tackling.

It was the launch of the first known girls tackle football league in America, it had the blessing of USA Football and the NFL, and there are even bigger possibilities in the distant future.

"The ultimate goal is for women to get paid to play," said Sam Rapoport, the director of development for USA Football. "We'd love to see women's tackle football played at the pro level."

To the dozens of Utah families that showed immediate interest in the league, it has already been a great idea. But in an age of heightened concussion awareness and fear of allowing children to play football, is it a good idea?

Girl football player, Sam Gordon, joined with Crystal Sacco to start the first all girls tackle football league
in the United States: Utah Girls Tackle Football League. The girls tackle football league kicked off its season
on Saturday and the highlights from the games are amazing!

The girls tackle football league was started in mid-March with the help of the owners of Salt Lake City's
Celtic Bank. Response to the league was overwhelmingly positive. The league capped participation at 50 girls
and those spots filled up in less than week from the date the league opened registration.

The league has four teams of twelve girls and games will be played on Saturdays for the next few weeks.
To make the game more fun, the league uses eight man rules so more players are running, passing, and
catching the ball, eliminated special teams and blitzing to reduce chances of injury, and uses a smaller ball
so it is easier to catch and throw.

I'd be wary of the injury and especially concussion potential. Some girls are as rugged or more so than some boys and would not hesitate in popping another player.

Sam Gordon shares how she decided to join with former women's tackle football player, Crystal Sacco, to
form the first tackle football league for girls in the US. Sam Gordon tells about the school assembly she
attended where a lot of girls said they'd love to play tackle football when Sam asked if there were any girls
who wanted to play tackle football.

Sam only gets one or two carries of the football in this league and she shares a couple of her runs.
The girls in this league learned quickly and were able to tackle Sam.

Sam Gordon tells her story about how she got started playing football as a nine year old girl. After
scoring the fastest times in every speed and agility drill in her age group, she was passed over by
seven coaches and picked in the middle of the group of players. Sam was determined to prove the
coaches wrong and she did just that, scoring five times on just eight carries in her first game ever.

The Utah Girls Tackle Football League offered a high school division for the first time in Spring 2017.
This highlight video shows high school girl football players making great tackles, big blocks, and nice runs.

The girls football league doubled in size again in 2017 with over 200 girls who played football on one of 16 teams.
The football league expects to continue to grow next year as more and more girls are joining the league. The quality
of football play is awesome considering that this was the first season of football for more than half of the girls in the league.

Not to sound too much like an idiot, but I saw only one pass attempt in that video clip of highlights and it was intercepted for a pick six. I wonder how often they throw in a game. June Jones would be sad.

I glad that you have that article on Beth Mowins because I liked her calling Hawaii games especially the 2001 Hawaii win over BYU. She was calling the ABC game today with UCLA vs. Memphis and she does a great job. Who says women don't belong in sports? So take that Hillary Clinton, as it may not be the American male public that is misogynistic but maybe you weren't the best selection.
