WORKSHOP WITH SPORTS ILLUSTRATED PHOTOGRAPHER INCLUDES A CLASS PHOTO SHOOT AT THE UH/UNLV FOOTBALL GAME

Peter Read Miller has been photographing athletes, events and the sporting life for more than 30 years. He is currently a staff photographer for Sports Illustrated, where he has worked for more than 20 years. His images have appeared on over 100 Sports Illustrated covers. In addition to covering 8 Olympic Games and 34 Super Bowls, Peter has shot 14 NBA Finals. He has covered the Stanley Cup Finals, World Series, Kentucky Derby, NCAA Basketball Final Four, and the Men’s and Women’s World Cup Soccer Finals.

UHM Outreach College's Pacific New Media presents a free public talk with Peter Read Miller, as well as a two day workshop on sports photography. Part of the workshop experience will include a class photo shoot at the UH/UNLV football game, followed by a critique of students' work. Peter has shot portraits of numerous world famous athletes including Muhammad Ali, Joe Montana, magic Johnson, Ivan Ivankov, Enaldo, Joh Wooden, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Barry Bonds, LeBron James, Gabriella Reece, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kathy Ireland.

His editorial clients have included: Time, Life, People, Money, Playboy, Runner’s World, Newsweek, USA Weekend and The New York Times. He has shot advertising for Canon, Nike, adidas, Visa, Coca-Cola, footlocker, Eastman Kodak, ABC Television, Panasonic, and The National Football League.

Peter has spoken at the Los Angeles Chapter of the Advertising Photographers of America, Photoshop World, Imaging USA, CES, and PDN’s Photo Plus East. He has also lectured at numerous colleges, universities, and professional photographic organizations. His work has been the subject of articles in Photo District News, American Photographer, Digital Photo Pro, Rangefinder Magazine and Shutterbug. He has been featured on numerous photography and technology websites including Wired.com, USA Today.com, Photo.net and PetaPixel.
Peter received the 2006 Dave Boss Award of Excellence Photographer of the Year awarded by The Pro Football Hall of Fame. He a member of Canon’s “Explorers of Light” program and is a Western Digital “Creative Master.” He is also the winner of the Society of Professional Journalists 2012 Award for Sports Photography.

Peter teaches yearly sports photography workshops in Denver, CO and in Atlanta, GA. He has also taught at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and The Rocky Mountain School of Photography. Peter’s book, Peter Read Miller on Sports Photography, is currently available from New Riders Press.

Sports Illustrated photographer Peter Read Miller shows images from his 35-year career as a sports photographer. Peter tells the stories behind the images and discuss the techniques involved in their creation. He also share tips and techniques that will help any photographer shoot better sports photographs.

Sports Illustrated photographer Peter Read Miller shares tips and techniques from his 35-year career as a sports photographer that can help the workshop students take their sports photos to the next level. Peter discusses approach and strategy for covering a sports event, technical issues including exposure and focus, and presenting final images with an emphasis on editing and cropping.

The class shoots several sporting events including the UH/UNLV football game on Saturday evening November 22, and concludes with Peter critiquing the students’ work from the weekend. Peter also covers shooting portraits of athletes including a live strobe portrait set-up with a local athlete.
