USC's cornerback position is a cause for concern

By Gary Klein, Los Angeles Times

March 31, 2013

After three weeks of spring practice, it's evident that USC has a major position-group issue to address before its opener at Hawaii in late August.

Yes, quarterback is still up in the air, though third-year sophomores Cody Kessler and Max Wittek showed Saturday that both are making progress if not separating themselves.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, their highlights came at the expense of a secondary that has proved consistently vulnerable at cornerback.

So maybe the reason we are going shotgun? I know that their front seven is their strength and that they are switching over to a 5-2 defense.

George Farmer carted from USC’s practice with leg injury
Posted by Ben Kercheval

While there is no official diagnosis, the outlook for USC wide receiver George Farmer doesn’t look particularly promising.

The junior-to-be was carted off the field from practice on Tuesday because of what was initially described by the Trojans as an apparent leg injury. The concern? It occurred in a non-contact drill, which usually doesn’t lend itself to good news.

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News reported later that Farmer had in fact suffered a torn ACL

Wide receiver George Farmer out for 2013 season with torn ACL

USC wide receiver George Farmer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during Tuesday's practice and will miss the 2013 season.

It was the latest setback for highly touted Farmer, who was expected to battle for the No. 3 wide receiver position next season. He was ranked one of the top wide receivers in the nation when he graduated from Serra High School in Gardena but played sparingly his first two seasons.

Farmer is eligible to redshirt and would have two years of eligibility remaining. Fellow Serra and USC wide receiver Marqise Lee did not practice Tuesday and continues to look like he might miss the rest of spring drills with a bruised bone in his knee.

Cornerback update

USC's cornerbacks are a definite weak spot in spring practices and defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast said one possibility next season is to play three safeties and one cornerback. It is even more likely because safety Su'a Cravens is already playing nickel back and athletic enough to play both spot

USC’s Demetrius Wright tweets he’s facing hip surgery

Posted by John Taylor on April 8, 2013, 4:33 PM EDT

Competing for a starting job in USC’s secondary, Demetrius Wright will instead face a recovery period that may or may not impact his availability for the 2013 season.

While the Trojans have yet to acknowledge it, Wright tweeted Monday morning that he will be forced to undergo hip surgery —maybe — at some point in the not-too-distant future

Injuries continue to pile up at USC football practice

If football season began Thursday, the Trojans would be in dire straits. At the start of practice, 20 players were sidelined with injuries. By the end, that list had grown to 22 after redshirt sophomore guard Cyrus Hobbi and senior cornerback Torin Harris went down with injuries as well.

USC’s depth at tight end takes another hit

Posted by Ben Kercheval on April 11, 2013, 10:30 PM EDT

USC lost its leading receiving tight end, Xavier Grimble, for the remainder of the spring last month because of a fractured chest. Now, the Trojans have lost another tight end for the spring because of injury.

It was announced Thursday that Randall Telfer had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will miss four to six weeks recovering. USC’s spring game is this weekend and depth figures to be an issue for the entire team as 20 players will be out with injuries.

USC freshman receiver out for the season with knee injury
By Rachel Fisher on June 7, 2013

USC freshman wide receiver Steven Mitchell is out for the season after tearing ligaments in his right knee during voluntary workouts.

According to reports, the injury occurred on Friday when Mitchell got his knee caught in field turf during a passing drill. His high school coach later told Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times that Mitchell would need an MRI.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Mitchell was a 4-star recruit out of Bishop Alemany in Mission Hills, Calif. He was expected to challenge for playing time as a slot receiver and in the return game.

USC is left with just five scholarship receivers on the roster for next season.

Marquise Lee and Nelson Agholor are the only returnees that caught more than one pass for the Trojans last season.

LOL In hindsight, the USC blowout was pedestrian compared to some of last years games. :o
