Dig a little and you can find many Hawaii wrestling people had surfing ties. Laura Blears Ching was a top surfer in her day. I believe she was either the daughter or granddaughter of Lord Tally Ho Blears.

When ever Ed Francis interviewed Johnny Barend... he had that music playing "Those Magnificient Men in their Flying Machine" and he always had his dark glasses on....

Lord Blears's daughter was also a surfer and she was in Playboy... I remember that....

KGMB didn't always fill time between matches with interviews. Once in a while,Johnny Barend would read childrens fairy tales that were probably more like nightmares really. The produces chroma-keyed him in front of psychedelic visual effects. He would wear a huge cape, top hat,and read from a ridiculoulsy
huge book all the while chomping down on a huge cigars. One can only shudder about the content of those stories.

Anyone remember Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka? Someone told me that once upon a time he played in a league at that field in Kalihi that faces the interchange of LikeLike Hwy & Lunalilo Freeway (kind of across from Kalihi Y) and Snuka use to hit homeruns over the fence on the freeway. They played either 14-inch or limited flight (red-dot?). I can't remember....

I remember Snuka from the late 70's and early 80's. At the time, I was living close enough to North Carolina where I could get a station that carried the Mid-
Atlantic Championship Wrestling show produced by Jim Crockett promotions. Having lived in Hawaii as a kid, I liked Snuka because he was an islander, but
he was a villian for most of his stay in Charlotte.

To this day, the thing I remember most about Snuka was his physique. He had enormous biceps, extraordinary definition, and I don't think that you could have pinched him with a pair of tweezers. He was very intelligent in his interviews.

I would like to mention another wrestler from that area that had somewhat of a local tie. He is Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. My first thought was I've seen Sam Steamboat. How come I've never seen this guy before now? Turns out that they are not related. His real name is Ricky Blood, and he is from New York.
His father is white, and the mother is Japanese from Hawaii,I think. At some point, according to the story I heard, Sam and Ricky were wrestling in the same town and the promoter liked the idea that the two should be related so Ricky became Sam Steamboats's nephew Rick Steamboat. He was a very good martial artist and still is.

In 80's I saw Snuka and Don Muracco at the 711 (across the then Kapiolani Local Motion)...
They just got through lifting at the fitness center near by...
This was about the time they were feuding on TV...

Funny Snuka isn't a name I recall, but looks like several of you remember him. He has been added to the list.

Billy was Russ' brother and they were a tag team. Billy was almost as big as Russ, who was 6-6 and 240 lbs.

Midweek: 50th State Big Time Wrestling

Post by T-Bone »

When Wrestling Was King

From 1962 to ’74 the Civic Auditorium was the place to be on Wednesday evenings. Friday night and Saturday afternoon were reserved for KGMB replays and the state’s first regionally produced live broadcast program.

The 50th State Big Time Wrestling was more than just a TV show and something to fill the entertainment void in the middle of the week.
