Re: cross country

its also worthwhile to note that the public schools not only have to practice only on their campuses, but most of their meets have had to be altered so that they are contained completely on campus. some of the campus courses end up being multiple loops on sidewalk and pavement with limited terrain a...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

hzy, its more than just the coaches getting after the athletes to keep moving between events. If they never tried competing in that many events earlier in the season, and if their workouts weren't geared toward being able to handle that many events AND the warmup and cooldowns (which could be as sim...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

As a coach at the Hawaii High School level for 25 years, I have seen some good and bad examples of athletes competing in multiple events at the state championships. Most of the bad examples is either the coach or athlete attempting to acheive some extraordinary feat without properly preparing the at...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

...the weather factor I noticed at War Memorial Stadium was the wind. A lot of adjustments had to be made on jumper's marks, steps on the hurdles, vaulters approaches, etc. It's in your face on the back straight, but dies as you get closer to the bleachers on the end. It's on your back in the turn, ...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

I'm still not sure why the HIADA voted to change the 1600m & 3200m to the 1500m & 3000m, as Hawaii is one of the few states that competes at that distance at the high school level. One of the arguments was that times would be more translateable to college coaches, since they compete at that ...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

Lewis would always have to come from behind in the 100, because there were several sprinters who've had better starts and better acceleration phases. He won races because he had a better maintenance phase and slowed down the least at the end of the race during the deceleration phase. It wasn't until...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

Having a fast 40 doesnt necessarily mean you can run a fast 100m. Pro Football player Ron Brown would regularly beat Carl Lewis in the shorter sprints during indoor season, but his best 100 (10.06) was nowhere near Lewis's best (9.86).

On the MileSplit site, for the Boys High School Rankings, Cody Forsyth of Punahou should be ranked #1 in the Pole Vault with the 13'0 mark he set at the ILH Meet.

Re: 2011 High School track and field

An ideal team would have the middle runners working hard to improve enough to catch the top runners, and the top runners knowing they have to work hard to improve so that they don't get caught by the middle runners. That way everyone improves.

Re: 2011 High School track and field

If they all train for it, running a sub-4 may eventually come easy for them, but if they are all competing for 1st place, they race may not come that easy, and may end up causing them to sacrifice the 3K. In 1996 unbeaten Pac-5 Senior Matt Stevens faced challenges from Mililani teammates Jason Norie...
