Re: Track and Field - States

After the criticism we gave them last year, they've improved somewhat on the broadcasting side. They actually sent someone to the outer islands to do their homework and talk a little bit about the key athletes going into this year's competition. Unlike last year, where they mainly mentioned athletes...

Re: cross country

This mandate from the Superintendent of the Department of Education is still in place and probably will never go away. only a handful of schools actually follow this though. Many still run off campus at their own choice and risk. And for those who are willing to take train on their own are heads abo...

Re: what's wrong with the kids?

Lack of school pride, motivation, laziness... call it what you want. Kids nowadays want immediate gratification. Most of them don't want to do the work. They are put on a pedestal made to think that they'll be able to play big time college or "get a scholarship"... yeah right! We all know ...

Re: BALDWIN FOOTBALL

Totally agree with MauiSun...they return a stacked team and should represent Maui at States. Coach AJ got himself into trouble hence why he's no longer coaching there.

Re: track and field 2013

Had Baldwin not missed out on points from their key competitors, it wouldn't have been that close. But since they did, they gave Punahou an opening that spoiled the potential repeat of Maui taking home 1 & 2. That' the beauty of track and field... you never know who really shows up, the team wit...

Re: track and field 2013

Update: Amber cleared 12'6"... quite a feat considering she also long jumps and runs the 100m and potentially the 4x100 (depends on when she's done with the vaults), which mean she has to go between events that just about happens at the same time for her. Keelan Ewaliko is the real deal... outs...

Re: track and field

We don't have to worry about recruiting athletes for cross country or track and field. They are either in the system or they're not. Most of the kids end up going to other schools for various reasons, so we work with what we have and try to produce quality athletes. We have Seabury Hall up the hill ...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

With all this chatter about how Seabury could have won, it could have gone both ways. Had it not been for Punahou's top vaulter no heighting or Julia Brand being taken out by a flying hurdle in the 100H, Punahou would have finished with more points. Maybe if Dakota has also ran the 800m and just pla...

Re: 2011 High School track and field

Grossman ran a 19:25 at States and had a 2010 PR of 19:13 on cross country courses, so the 19:13 she ran on a road course, even if it is .1 mi (160meters) longer, is slower than what she is capable of running during the peak of the track season. If Hirsch ran in the mid to low 18s to beat Grossman, ...

Re: 2010 Cross Country

welshrarebit Re: 2010 Cross Country I was looking at past records of races and was suprised at how few kids medal every year. So, I went back and looked at the last four years to see, by class, how many kids there were: Care to clarify what you mean? Are you talking about state champions or repeat c...

Re: 2010 Cross Country

A bit of clarification here: There was no mention in my previous comment about team titles not lasting forever, so let's get that straight. I did mention that we're not too fixated on winning team championships/titles, because you need to have the right talent/drive and numbers to fight for a team t...

Re: 2010 Cross Country

In response to nogutsnoglory: Maui's coaches support the top runners, current or upcoming and we're not too fixated on winning team championships/titles. We don't have the numbers or the luxury of getting new recruits (military/transfers), so the focus is developing what we have. Should the numbers ...

Re: Track and Field 2010

In response to HI way... no one said to throw out past meet records. There are records that were set using stopwatches or 8/10 lane timers way before FAT were readily available, but in this day in age where leagues have access to FAT devices then that should serve as the primary timing. No one menti...

Re: Track and Field 2010

Regarding hand timed meets... If the meet coordinators were using stopwatches, then I would throw the times out. If they were using 8 lane timers that have one starter startiing the clock then I would allow those times to be converted up to the FAT standards. FAT is great, however it's not foolproof...
