Cupcakes for Daddy!

Well, today didn’t go as planned.  I forgot that Maddie has to fast before surgery.  I just remembered at 8am when she finished a big bowl of cottage cheese and yogurt with cereal and was about to start on some leftover pizza.  She wasn’t supposed to eat after 5am.  Uh-oh…

I called PAU (Pediatric Ambulatory Unit) to let them know.  They knew she just didn’t have a couple sips of milk.  The steroid that she’s taking makes her appetite voracious!  They weren’t able to reschedule the surgery to later in the day so we are scheduled for early tomorrow morning.

With a big smile on her face, Maddie shouted, “let’s do something fun!”.  “Can we make a birthday cake for daddy since he had to spend his birthday in the hospital with me?” she asked.  I gladly agreed to that.  The wonderful Make-A-Wish Foundation will be granting Maddie a wish and, in the hospital, she said her wish was to go to Disneyland.  Today, while we were making daddy’s cupcakes, she said, “for daddy’s birthday, I want to give my wish to him.”  Her words brought tears to my eyes.  With all Maddie’s going through, she still puts everyone else before herself.  Maddie has really become such an inspiration for us.

We stuck a candle in his peanut butter chocolate chip double fudge cupcake and sang Happy Birthday to daddy, just as Maddie wanted.  And the cupcakes were delicious too!
