Notre Dame gave Charlie Weis the gift the Fighting Irish head coach wanted most this Christmas.
Notre Dame ended the program’s NCAA record nine-game bowl losing streak with a dominant 49-21 win over Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium.
Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen dazzled the crowd of 43,487 by completing 22 of 26 passes for 401 yards — 300 coming in the first half — and five touchdowns and the Fighting Irish won their first postseason game since New Year’s Day of 1994.
Three of Clausen’s scores went to fellow sophomore Golden Tate, who finished with six receptions for 177 yards as the Irish ended the season at 7-6.
And Chawan Cut says it well:
Thank you to the 2008 team and all of its Seniors!!!
Thank you for spilling your guts for us.
Thank you for waking up at the crack of dawn all those mornings to strap it on and string it up to practice play after play.
Thank you for your sacrifice to play for your teammates, for us, and the state of Hawaii.
No matter what people think with their opinions and judgements, you are the ones out there playing your butts off wearing the H on your helmet and jersey, against another team who is also practicing and playing with all their might.
Sometimes the ball bounces our way, sometimes it bounces theirs. Thats the game you play.
Thank you to your families for sharing your time with us.
Thank you to the coaches, staff and their families for giving all that they could day after day, night after night.
Not sure how many of you read this, but I just wanted to express my thanks.
